Whether you are succeeding a much-admired boss or charged with implementing sweeping, potentially unsettling change initiatives, a new role is fraught with obstacles. To ensure that your first steps in a new job will lead to enduring success, "Right from the Start" lays out an action-oriented framework to follow during the early months of a transition. Dan Ciampa and Michael D. Watkins prepare you for the often-treacherous task of navigating an organization's strategy, politics, and culture so that you can smoothly and effectively get to work on your new agenda. "Right from the Start" combines this tactical advice with absorbing profiles of CEOs, COOs, and EVPs who candidly discuss their experiences - the successes and the failures - with transitioning to a new leadership role.

Our firm provides outplacement and retained search services.
We are providing this book for all our successful job candidates.
The focus of this book is to help new manage successfully navigate the first six months of an assignment. It begins with the fuzzy beginnings, when job candidate and recruiter first talk with each other.
The Tables beginning on pages 134 are quite useful.
When two authors write a book together, a reader should have the right to expect a duet unless the authors explicitly state otherwise.
The book suffers lack of coordination between the authors.
Chapters 8,9,10 are written in a different voice and lack the practical, time- sensitive punch of the first half of the book.
Indeed Chapters 8, 9, 10 don't appear to be written from the perspective of the reader of this book. It is more like a major cut-and-paste job from a Management 101 text, with superficial references to earlier chapters. The reality is that Chapters 8,9, and 10 could have been easily deleted from the entire book.

I was surprised at how few reviews there were of this excellent book. perhaps there are few people at the CEO level that get parachuted in from the outside.

I judge how good a book is by if I take action as a result. And I did take action. I did a simple one page description for my new direct reports on "working with Jim".

It reaffirmed the need to vision. Of course I knew that but it really reinforced it.

It also talked a lot about politics which can be very tough. Not like nice hard numbers.

A must read for any new CEO.

I utilized the concepts in Right from the Start to support my success as I transitioned to a new career opportunity as National Training Director. I had led smaller teams in the past, but this team consisted of 40 professionals geographically dispersed throughout the USA. I also was interfacing with C suite executives on a daily basis. The concepts described within this book helped me navigate the corporate maze, garner cooperation and drive results. Thank you!

I read the ebook experiences others had and decided not to purchase the ebook and for that matter the book period today through Amazon.

Amazon needs to take seriously the buyers that come to its online stores and remove such eBooks if they are only a 9 page summary.

Disgusted and will buy from another online provider.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good but not for the CEO, more the number 2
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 2020
I’m enjoying this book, but I did think it was for first time CEOs, but it’s actually explicitly written for the number 2 in an org as opposed to the ultimate decision maker. Still able to glean good insights from it, but I wonder what would be different if it was targeted at the number one in charge.
