Emission Inventories
Contact
The California Air Resources Board, with the support of the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association, has developed a video series on Air Quality Fundamentals to provide an introduction to air pollution control and greenhouse gas emissions reduction in California.
Emission Inventory
An emission inventory is an estimation of the amount of pollutants discharged into the atmosphere that can be broken down by specified source categories in a certain geographical area and within a specified time span (e.g., in a calendar year).
CARB is responsible for developing California’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory and its inventory of air pollutants. Many sources emit air pollutants and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The collection of these sources and their associated emissions is called an emissions inventory. Emissions inventories are most often used to plan and develop emission reduction strategies. They also help us prioritize our work and track progress on meeting California’s air quality and greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.
