Alys' story

A recent Cardiff graduate, Alys Mai Walters, knew she wanted to go to university from a young age. She said: “My older sister was the first in our family to go to university. I always wanted to follow in her footsteps, so I decided to do an undergraduate course and applied to Cardiff University to study Welsh and Journalism.

Moving to Cardiff

Cardiff University helped Alys gain paid work experience placements while studying, which she says helped her secure a job in Cardiff after finishing her degree.

“University is a lot of fun, especially with the course I chose. I had the opportunity to take part in so many experiences both within and outside of my academic work,” she said.

“The experiences provided by my university gave me a head start. I strongly believe that external work experiences, and opportunities to make new connections and work with other people, gave me the confidence to land a new job straight after graduating.”

Working Wales support

As well as support through her university, Alys was able to get free advice and guidance through Working Wales to help her decide on a path and find a job.

She said: “Going to Cardiff University was the right choice for me. If you’re thinking about applying, I would consider the right location for you and make sure the course is something you’re really interested in – whatever that might be.

Advice to others

“Pick something you can see a future in, but most importantly, choose something you enjoy and can really see yourself doing. Working Wales really helped me personally – and all the advice I had from them was free. If you’re unsure of your next steps, they can help you too.”
