The admin email has nothing to do with your WordPress user account and the email stored there. They are often the same, but they have no connection.
So where did you change the email? In your user account or in the admin email?
@threadi
I changed the email using the dashboard Settings>General, right below the Site Address (URL). I got a mail at the new mail address. I clicked the link given in it. I reached my site but couldn’t sign in. Was it possible that I had changed my PW and forgotten about it. Possible. I tried a different PW and was able to login! So it was a case of mistaken password? Here is the mystery.
I entered the Admin area. My email (me@example1.com) was not changed under Settings, and there was this message:
There is a pending change of the admin email to me@example2.com
I have no idea how to explain this.
After several attempts let me confirm that I can’t change the email address under
wp-admin/options-general.php
So you have changed the admin e-mail. Your normal login is not affected by this. You should be able to log in with the access data you know. Please note that you must also use the previous e-mail to log in – not the one you have entered as the new admin e-mail, as this is not relevant for logging in.
The confirmation of the new admin e-mail is of course still pending. To do this, you must have received an email with a confirmation link to the new email address. Only when you click on this link will the admin email actually change. Again, the change has nothing to do with your login.
I sorted out the issue. It’s at the server level. I use different browsers to use my different Gmail accounts. My site is with Hostinger. You won’t believe it, but their machinery is browser-bound. They associate your ID with a browser! There was a time when I used to reach my admin dashboard whenever I opened Google Chrome. To make a long story short. I used my Chrome browser to read the message from WP to the new email address (for which I usually use MS Edge). I clicked the link, and immediately reached the Site admin — even w/o logging in! And I saw that the admin email was changed as I wanted it.
Thanks a lot for your time, @threadi

Nice that you have found a solution. And interesting how your hoster seems to proceed. You are welcome to set the topic to solved.
Again, thanks a lot @threadi. Closing the topic.
