If you have not previously provided proof of ID when applying for an absentee ballot, you must include a copy of your photo ID with your ballot application. This rule does not apply if you are: indefinitely confined, residing in a care facility, a military voter, or an overseas voter. Additionally, when voting absentee, you must vote your ballot in the presence of a witness. A witness can be any U.S. citizen who is at least 18 years old as long as they are not a candidate on the ballot for the election. For military and overseas voters, a witness must be at least 18 years old, but is not required to be a citizen.

  • In Person: The Sunday before Election Day.
  • By Mail: Received by 5pm 5 days before Election Day.
  • Online: Received by 5pm, 5 days before Election Day.

Ballot deadlines

  • Voted ballots are due: Received by 8pm on Election Day.

Wisconsin absentee ballot rules

Any registered Wisconsin voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

Wisconsin absentee ballot directions

  1. Use our Absentee Ballot Tool to prepare your application.
  2. Sign and date the form. This is very important!
  3. Be sure to include a copy of your photo ID.
  4. Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We'll provide the mailing address for you.
  5. All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. Your Local Election Official will also let you fax or email the application.
  6. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
  7. Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.

Tracking your ballot

You can track your ballot directly with your state.

Once you receive your ballot...

  1. Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
  2. Vote your ballot in the presence of a witness and seal the envelope.
  3. Sign the Certification of Voter section.
  4. Have the witness complete the Certification of Witness section (they must provide their name, signature, and complete address).
  5. Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope or drop it off at your municipal clerk's office.
  6. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
