Our mission

Vote.gov is a trusted source for accurate, official voting information from the U.S. government to the American public. Our mission is to make it easy for all eligible voters to understand how to register and vote.

Vote.gov directs voters to their state election websites for state-specific voting information. Vote.gov does not register people to vote. You must register directly with your state. Vote.gov prioritizes user privacy by not collecting or storing any personal data from the public.

Vote.gov offers voting information in many languages. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that almost 70 million people speak a language other than English at home. We provide voting information in languages that reflect the diversity of U.S. citizens to help people exercise their right to vote.

Who we are

Vote.gov is an official website of the U.S. government managed by the Technology Transformation Services (TTS) within the General Services Administration (GSA).

We partner closely with the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to ensure we’re delivering trustworthy, consistent voting information.

We also partner with other federal agencies — including the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and Department of State — to share information about voting with people when they interact with other government services.

We have close relationships with state and local election officials through the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED) to ensure we share accurate state voting information.

History

Vote.gov was established in 2016. In 2021, President Biden passed the Executive Order 14019 on Promoting Access to Voting. This law tasked GSA with improving vote.gov, especially for people who experience barriers to voting.

GSA updated the website to meet the goals of Executive Order 14019. The vote.gov website aims to serve all members of the public by offering:

  • Voting information in 20 languages, representing 96% of the American public 
  • Improved accessibility features including plain language, screen reader compatibility, and high-contrast designs
  • A digital form filler tool to improve the accessibility of the National Mail Voter Registration Form 
  • Search.gov functionality in compliance with the 21st Century IDEA. This makes it easier for people to search for and find the voting information they’re looking for in many languages.
  • Voting guidance from federal agency partners in one centralized resource
