Viya’s Hurricane Preparedness Reminders

In the face of impending severe weather, hurricanes and disasters, Viya emphasizes the importance of staying informed through local radio,
television and social media channels to receive updates from the US Virgin Islands premier telecommunications provider.

Vice President of Public Relations and Governmental Affairs Jennifer Matarangas-King stated, “Viya remains committed to keeping customers
connected before, during and after severe weather that affects our community. Through continuous communication on various platforms,
including live radio shows, social media updates and engagement with customers during our community outreach events, Viya prioritizes disaster preparedness initiatives to ensure connectivity remains a vital element ofcommunity life.”

Viya’s website is a useful customer care and billing portal that allows customers to receive assistance and critical information 24
hours a day and seven days a week. Viya’s Facebook page is another source of real time updates in the event of a disaster.

Viya also encourages customers to sign up for the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency’s alert system to closely track the path of impending storms and actions that are being taken by the local government. Customers can simply log on to www.vitema.vi.gov to register to receive emergency alerts on their email, wireless mobile device, or telephone.

The Viya team participates in VITEMA’s Emergency Management Council meetings and regularly collaborates with VITEMA on training initiatives and supports VITEMA’s efforts to keep the public informed of all natural disasters including hurricanes.

Collaborating closely with emergency management authorities such as VITEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Virgin Islands Department of Public Works, Viya ensures coordinated efforts to enhance community resilience.

Viya advises customers to include critical communication equipment on the list of things that they should consider as they prepare for Hurricane Season. Ensure that modems and wireless devices are adequately charged and secure spare power sources in the event of the loss of commercial power. In addition to devices such as smartphones and hotspot devices, Viya encourages customers to include accessories such as phone chargers, solar chargers, and battery banks in their communication preparedness kit. Viya offers a variety of connectivity essentials to help prepare you in the event of power loss during a storm, including:

Team Viya Makes It To The Playoffs!

Viya extends hearty congratulations to all the members of Team Viya, who recently competed in the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreations’ Government Softball League, and made playoffs in the team’s inaugural year!

This summer, Team Manager Richard Julius led 30 enthusiastic players who represented Viya with pride during 18 games against representatives of government departments and semi-autonomous agencies. Julius stated, “It was an honor to practice, play, and win with my colleagues this season. It means a lot to us because this is the first time we have played as Team Viya. This experience has strengthened our relationships on and off the field. Although we fell short in the first round of the playoff, we’ll revamp, refocus, and play harder next year.”

Team Captain Bernard Jude, who last played when the company was named “Innovative”, was happy to see his fellow employees on the field. “It is great for us to revive our team after twenty years. We made it with a couple of veterans and mostly first-time players who worked hard to get us to the playoffs. I am so proud of everyone on the team who put in such a great effort in our first year. We are looking forward to joining the league next year.”

CEO Geraldine Pitt stated, “I am proud of the members of Team Viya, who served as exemplary ambassadors while showcasing their athletic prowess and sportsmanship throughout the summer. Heartfelt gratitude is also extended to their colleagues who went to all the games to support their efforts and cheer in the stands.”

Throughout the playoffs, Team Viya continues to support the remaining teams and fans. On September 16, 2023, Viya’s CEO Geraldine Pitt was on hand for Fan Appreciation Day to present two MiFi devices with one year of service to two lucky and loyal fans. Last weekend, during Player Appreciation Day, two players received Viya’s popular mobile hotspots with one year of service. The four prizes are valued at over $4,500.

High-Speed Fiber for Public Schools

Viya, the only full-service telecommunications provider in the USVI, was recently awarded the VI Department of Education’s E-Rate Wide Area Network (WAN) Leased Lit Fiber contract to bring high-speed, fiber-based connectivity to all public schools.

The Schools and Libraries (E-rate) Program provides discounts to assist eligible schools and libraries in obtaining affordable internet access and telecommunications services.

Viya is uniquely suited to serve Virgin Islands schools and libraries. Over the last six years, Viya has invested over $100M in rebuilding a resilient and fully-redundant network. As done previously for other similar government initiatives, Viya will collaboratively use viNGN’s network to connect over 50 educational sites identified in the VI DOE’s Wide Area Network in this public-private partnership.

CEO Geraldine Pitt stated, “This relationship fostered between Viya and viNGN through this contract, is a step in the right direction to facilitate other similar public-private initiatives that Viya can collaborate on to ensure that the Territory benefits from a more digitized teaching and learning experience.”

The project is 100% fiber-based to provide the fastest speeds and the inter-island link between the two VI Department of Education Network Operations Centers (NOCs), guarantees continued connectivity even during an outage. The VI Department of Education will also have real- time access to network monitoring and management tools.

Viya has always been ready to provide comprehensive, reliable connectivity to the VI Department of Education. As the premier ICT and Managed Services provider with local resources, Viya is proud that the entire account and implementation team consists of local industry experts who will work closely with the VI Department of Education to keep VI students connected.

Education Commissioner Dr. Dionne Wells-Hedrington stated, “The Department of Education is pleased to partner with Viya on this important venture that would ensure greater stability and reliability in the Department’s current internet infrastructure. This partnership is critical, as we are educating 21st century learners, and having reliable internet connectivity is not an option; it is a priority. We look forward to the speedy rollout of the E-rate program.”

Viya has a long history of supporting educational initiatives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Virgin Islands Department of Education contracted with Viya for over 5,000 Mi-Fi/ Mobile Hotspot devices. Viya assisted the VI Department of Education in connecting students to online learning platforms using its high-speed 4G LTE network with the Mi-Fi service. These devices provided 75Gbps of bandwidth for students to attend school remotely and complete educational activities.

Viya Announces Changes To Its Cable TV Channel Lineup

Viya, the premier communications and entertainment provider in the Territory, will be making exciting changes to its channel lineup this month.

Viya is proud to announce the launch of Reef TV, a 24-hour live stream of Caribbean and local content featuring events, variety shows, movies and news, on July 31, 2022. The programming is being produced by the dynamic team at Reef Broadcasting Radio Stations which includes WDHP 1620 AM and WAXJ 103.5 FM. The aforementioned stations feature VI In The Morning with St. Claire Williams from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., which will be live streamed on the channel simultaneously in the near future. Reef TV will air on Channel 20.

The following channels will be discontinued from the channel lineup on August 15, 2022.

While women have always been leaders and educators in this community, the presence of women in technology roles has always been the modus operandi at Viya.
