Wire and Wood Pre-Order

Five years ago, Michael Mesker in collaboration with RUFUS PUBLICATIONS, began a journey to capture the most expansive creative overview ever assembled of one singular guitarist’s collection of instruments. That subject being Steve Vai. A guitarist who has pushed the envelope of innovation consistently for decades.

The end result of Mesker’s crusade features over 100 of Vai’s most famous guitars captured in exquisite detail, and presented in a two-volume large format photography book. There are over 1000 full color pages, all photographed, designed and researched by Steve’s long-tenured Art Director Mesker, who first explored Vai’s famed guitar vault in December 2002 and marveled at the history contained within.

The book will be available in three tiered offerings. First, a Standard Edition which presents the 2-volume book housed in a slipcase encompassing 1000+ pages combined in a 9.5” x 13.5” (241mm x 343mm) page size with a retail price of $400.00. The Deluxe Edition, priced at $777.00, is a larger A3 size of the 2-volume book in a slipcase, signed and numbered by Steve Vai. It will be limited to 500 copies. The page size is 11.7” x 16.5” (297mm x 420mm). It also includes a selection of ten framable photo prints from a random assortment of the guitars in the book. It also includes “case candy” of used picks, strings, guitar parts all from Vai’s guitars and some random tour ephemera.

There will be an Ultra Edition, limited to only 14 units that includes all of the items in the Deluxe package, plus an IBANEZ JEM 77WFP “White Floral Pattern.” A highly limited edition run of these instruments have been hand constructed by the Ibanez Japan Custom Shop. The guitar will come with a signed certificate from Steve, who will also give each of the instruments a unique name which will appear on the documentation. This is the first Japan-made Ibanez Jem in five years, with an Alder body, a five-piece neck, rosewood fretboard, Tree of Life inlay, vintage white floral pattern fabric finish, DiMarzio Evolution pickups, LoPro Edge tremolo and matching Cliplock strap. Steve Vai will be bringing this new guitar out on the BEAT tour which will stage 65 appearances across North America from September 12 in San Jose through December 18 in Highland, CA.

Pre-order now at https://www.rufuspublications.com/rufusbooks/vai/.

All books and guitars will ship late March, 2025.

Zeus In Chains Augmented Reality App

Here’s an app project we have been working on for quite sometime and I’m told it’s unique.
After meeting with the good people at 4DR studios in Eindhoven Holland, I was captured in their studio using their volumetric approach while performing Zeus in Chains.
This app allows the user to project that captured performance of me into any environment as viewed through their cell phone. I had a blast capturing myself in a few locations and cut together the 1st 60 seconds of a video for the song. Then we thought, how engaging it might be for folks if we completed the video with fan created content. The goal here is to build a final full length video for “Zeus in Chains” with fan created content. You just download the app, find the coolest, or silliest situations to project me into. The app allows for a 10 second capture from any part of the full performance. Then just upload tagging #VaiEverywhere where we will pull them together for me to choose from, and I will edit together the final vid. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the crazy places you put me.
Enjoy!

Vai Academy 7

This year’s Vai Academy Camp 7.0 was just off the hook fantastic. Totally sold out in advance and our biggest group so far. It’s so nice to be in an environment filled with guitar lovers that are eager to embrace the guitar culture, meet with so many other like minded people, thrive in an immersive experience and raise their own bar. Not to mention party time by the fire pit!
The nightly jam with the campers was the best. Perhaps 4 hours a night for 4 straight nights of meeting each one with a hot guitar strapped on them and presenting the band with a simple little riff that we would then explore. To musically respond with them in that intimate sacred musical sharing mind is what it’s all about. I love them all so much.
I also noticed that we have many return campers, and so many people who have created bonds through these events with others. It’s more like a camping family these days.
And our list of guests this year revealed some of the most striking and technique elevated artists in our current times. Our special guests included Mohini Dey, Daniele Gottardo, Tim Henson, Scott LePage, Sarah Longfield, Marcin, Matteo Mancuso, Yvette Young and Jordan Rudess, and each of these inspired artists dazzled us with their unique and fascinating touch on the guitar. In Mohini’s case it was the bass. She is a phenom that is pushing forward what’s possible, as is our other guests. Being able to jam with the guests was another highlight. They inspired me beyond.
My most sincere thanks to all the campers, clinicians and special guests that helped to make this years Vai Academy 7.0 such a memorable life experience.
Now I’m looking forward to the next one! See you there.
