DI John Tolin returns to work after an extended period of leave, but his first case back is a doozy: a multi-vehicle accident involving police officers, the car they were pursuing, a millionaire businessman, and a mysteriously abandoned van.

At the scene of the crash, the cops assist victims, the van driver flees, a romantic connection is formed, and Inspector Ann Stallwood takes control of the case.

Daniel contacts his brother for help, while Tolin investigates the disappearance of Karen Donnelly and clashes with Stallwood over the case and their unresolved issues.

After Jeffrey and Sandra are brought in for questioning about the body found in Daniel's van, Sandra demands that her husband come clean to her and takes charge of the situation.

Tolin searches for another copy of the files that Karen stole from her company. Stallwood finally determines what caused the crash that impacted all these people's lives.
