Delanie Walker talks getting cut by Titans in 2020, his future in NFL

Former Tennessee Titans tight end Delanie Walker was a guest on the “Talking with TD” podcast hosted by ESPN’s Turron Davenport and touched on a number of topics, including his thoughts on getting cut by the Titans in 2020 and what his future holds in 2021.

Based on his answer, it doesn’t appear that Walker has any ill will towards the Titans after they released him during the 2020 offseason. In fact, he said he understands why Tennessee made the move.

“Well, at the end of the day, I’ve been playing this game for a long time so I assumed I was near…” Walker admitted. “My agent was kind of upset, but I didn’t get upset. I just felt like it’s business, I didn’t perform at the highest level for the last two years, so I understood that, and they paid me a lot of money. So, it made sense to me.”

After taking last season off to get his body and ankle right following two injury-plagued campaigns in a row, Walker is looking to return to the NFL in 2021, with his aim being to join a contender and win a Super Bowl ring.

“I want to play football. I feel like I need to get a Super Bowl ring, so my objective is really to try to go to a team that’s a contender. But it is the NFL, you never know what team can be a contender,” Walker said.

While he believes he will eventually get an opportunity when training camps roll around this month, Walker isn’t certain where he’ll ultimately land and says his options are open. He also thinks teams are hesitant to give him a good deal because of his age and concerns about his ankle.

“So, my options are open, but the thing is it’s hard trying to stay in shape by yourself. When you go to OTAs and you do all the little minicamps, that gets you prepared for football. Then you get this little break, just to stay in shape to come back into training camp, so my goal is just to try and get in the best shape I can possibly get in because I know that opportunity is going to come where someone is going to need a tight end for training camp, and that’s where my opportunity is going to come. But for right now, I couldn’t tell you who I will be playing for or what teams are looking at me. They talk to me, but at the end of the day I feel like they think that the ankle is a problem, and my age, so teams are really not trying to give me a good deal I feel like.”

Walker went on to reveal that there haven’t been anymore complications with his ankle and he feels like the same player from two years ago.

In clips we’ve seen of him in action recently, like the workout video that was posted to social media in April or the clips of him taking part in “Tight End University” last month, Walker looks to be healthy and in great shape.

The 36-year-old reportedly had a workout with his other former team in June, the San Francisco 49ers, but nothing came of it. Interestingly enough, the team signed fellow former Titans tight end MyCole Pruitt instead.

One team that could use some help at tight end right now is the Titans.

Tennessee is lacking a well-rounded player at the position with Geoff Swaim, a blocking specialist, and Anthony Firkser, a pass-catching specialist, set to man the top-two spots on the depth chart.

Walker would be a great complement for the Titans at the position, and he wouldn’t need to carry the load with plenty of help around him. We continue to believe that a Walker-Titans reunion makes a ton of sense as long as the price is right.
