‘Election Countdown,’ with guest Justin Young

Scott Klug was a 32-year Democratic members of Congress from Wisconsin. Despite winning his four elections by an average of 63 percent. he stayed true to his term limit pledge and retired.

During his time in Congress, Klug had the third most independent voting record of any Wisconsin lawmaker in the last 50 years. In September 2023, he launched a podcast, “Lost in the Middle,” to shine a spotlight on the oft ignored political center.

The Fulcrum has covered several of Klug’s podcasts about America’s “political orphans,” highlighting what he describes as 71 million bewildered, frustrated voters.

American democracy is facing an onslaught of fear and anger — driven by elections that candidates can win just by demonizing opponents, and social media that earn billions by stoking our primal emotions. Those emotions are so raw that frequent calls for civility have failed to work.

Indeed, after the upcoming election, voters on the losing side are likely to lash out more fiercely than ever in our lifetimes. And in January, the two parties are nearly certain to clash incessantly over a path forward, further fueling Americans’ angst, perhaps to the breaking point.

We're just two weeks away from Election Day, and Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are sprinting from state to state in the race to the White House. However, increasing reports suggest Trump has been canceling some of his campaign events, with some critics attributing the decisions to fatigue and concerns about age.

At 78, Trump is the oldest presidential nominee in U.S. history. This adds an interesting dynamic to the campaign, especially considering the narratives he pushed about his previous opponent, President Joe Biden.
