Spiller and Tyler Grisham.

The two former Tiger players and current Clemson assistant coaches touched on plenty of interesting things, including this question from podcast host and Associate AD/Football Communications & Strategic Initiatives Ross Taylor:

If they could take one skill or attribute from one player they’ve coached, at the present time or in the past, what would Spiller and Grisham want for the skillset they had when they were players?

Spiller, who was formally inducted into the Clemson Ring of Honor last Saturday, answered first, saying he’d choose the power of current Clemson senior running back Phil Mafah.

“I mean, for the last two weeks – it started in Florida State when he ran No. 24 (DB K.J. Kirkland) over, and then it went over to Wake Forest when he got (DB Nick Andersen) – and I think if I had just had just that little bit, I think that would have helped me out a little more,” said Spiller, an All-ACC and All-American running back for the Tigers (2006-09) and the 2009 ACC Player of the Year who has been Clemson’s running backs coach since 2021.

“Because everybody just knew me as a speed guy. Like, I was strong, but they really didn’t respect my game as a power guy like James Davis. So, I would love to take the power that Phil has… that would be one thing.”

Grisham then talked about what he’d take for his own game when he was a player, pointing to what Clemson true freshman receiver Bryant Wesco brings to the table.

“I’ll say this, like, Wesco covers so much ground when he runs,” said Grisham, who has served as Clemson’s receivers coach since 2020 after recording more than 130 catches and nearly 1,400 yards as a receiver for the Tigers from 2005-08.

“He just covers so much ground, and the endurance that he has taking like two steps every 7 yards or 8 yards. I mean it’s crazy. That would’ve really helped me. My little legs running around… I could get you 10 yards, man. I could get you a first down, but after one juke, it’s about over for me.”

Swinney updates Injury to Freshman Receiver https://theclemsoninsider.com/2024/10/19/swinney-updates-injury-to-freshman-receiver/ Sat, 19 Oct 2024 22:30:29 +0000 https://theclemsoninsider.com/?p=638845 CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave an update to an injured freshman receiver following No. 10 Clemson’s 48-31 victory over Virginia Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Bryant Wesco did not play for the second week in a row. The wide receiver was banged up in the Tigers’ win over Florida State on Oct. 5, as TCI saw him limping back to the team bus after the game.

Clemson held him out of last week’s win over Wake Forest and then Saturday’s victory over the Cavaliers.

“We are hopeful after the open date he is ready to go,” Swinney said. “He has done everything he needs to do, so we will learn more next Monday after he gets a full week.”

Wesco played in the first five games this season before missing the last two. He has 11 catches for 262 yards and two touchdowns this season. He is averaging 23.8 yards per catch.

Wesco did not play in the 10th-ranked Tigers win over Wake Forest last week after being banged up in the Florida State game on Oct. 5.

Swinney updated the status for the freshman as the Tigers get set to host Virginia on Saturday (noon, ACCN) at Memorial Stadium.

“He has been out there (at practice) every day. Same thing, he’s day-to-day,” Swinney said. “He is a little better each day.”

Before getting hurt at FSU, Wesco caught four passes for 24 yards. On the year, he has hauled in 11 catches for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He is averaging 23.8 yards per catch.

Swinney on Why Wesco Didn’t Play vs. Wake Forest https://theclemsoninsider.com/2024/10/12/swinney-on-why-wesco-didnt-play-vs-wake-forest/ Sat, 12 Oct 2024 20:17:34 +0000 https://theclemsoninsider.com/?p=638375 Following No. 10 Clemson’s 49-14 win over Wake Forest on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave an injury update on Bryant Wesco.

The star freshman receiver missed Saturday’s game and did not travel to Winston-Salem.

“He rolled his ankle, so he wasn’t able to go,” Swinney said. “He is day to day, so hopefully we’ll get him back next week.”

Swinney said the injury occurred in Clemson’s win over Florida State last Saturday.

“In the game last week, he rolled it,” Swinney said. “I think it was on that two-minute drive where he tried to run to the sideline instead of just getting up the field. He played the whole game. He finished, but he was pretty sore the next day.”

Wesco caught four passes for 24 yards vs. FSU. In five games this season, the former five-star prospect from Texas has 11 catches for 262 yards and two touchdowns.

Wesco says NC State Game ‘Will be a Dog Fight’ https://theclemsoninsider.com/2024/09/21/wesco-says-nc-state-game-will-be-a-dog-fight/ Sat, 21 Sep 2024 13:06:16 +0000 CLEMSON — The Clemson Tigers are coming off an historic record-breaking game against Appalachian State on Sept 7.

–Earlier this week, freshman wideout Bryant Wesco described the continued togetherness of the team. He explained that chemistry has tremendously increased and improved the team’s performance. The 21st-ranked Tigers kick off ACC play against the NC State Wolfpack on Saturday (noon, ABC) at Memorial Stadium.

–Wesco described that preparation for a conference matchup is no different from any other game. Last season, the Tigers fell short to NC State is a 24-17 loss. Wesco explained, “You just have to know that they’re coming in to beat you and it’s going to be a dog fight.”

–The true freshman noted that his ability to track the ball through the air has improved. He explained that it used to be something he struggled with. Wesco says the impact it had against App State helped, “The work that I put in resulted in us being able to get downfield.” Wesco caught three passes for 130 yards. The 76-yard touchdown pass from Klubnik was Clemson’s first touchdown of the season, as well as his first career touchdown. The two later connected on a 56-yard pass that set up Klubnik’s first rushing touchdown of the season.

–Wesco talked about his continued relationship with receivers Antonio Williams and Adam Randall. He called them the “best leaders and hardest workers I know.” He explained how chemistry amongst the offense has flourished despite how early it is in the season.

Wesco able to 'Play to my own Standard' https://theclemsoninsider.com/2024/09/19/wesco-jr-shares-confidence-of-offense-able-to-play-to-my-own-standard/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 15:50:05 +0000 https://theclemsoninsider.com/2024/09/19/wesco-jr-shares-confidence-of-offense-able-to-play-to-my-own-standard/ CLEMSON — The Clemson Tigers earned their first touchdown last week and then some, setting team and ACC records and bouncing back big after their loss to Georgia in Week 1.

On the first offensive drive, quarterback Cade Klubnik hit a deep ball to freshman receiver Bryant Wesco Jr., for a 76-yard touchdown, earning the season’s first score of the 2024 season. It was an incredible way for an incoming talent to start his college career.

“At that moment, I kinda blacked out,” Wesco said. “It was a crazy experience for the first touchdown of the season.”

Wesco, a five-star recruit from Midlothian High School in Texas, earned his first start against Appalachian State and showed off his ability. With three catches for 130 yards, the freshman led all receivers in yards.

“The confidence boost is amazing,” Wesco said. “Confidence to go out and play to my own standard. I like to play, instead of playing to the standard of others, I could play to my own standard.”

While his performance was certainly an experience he can use as a boost, Wesco admitted his confidence and abilities from himself, as well as the entire unit, even helped.

“We have that confidence already within our team,” he said. “That’s just what we are supposed to do. Our confidence shouldn’t come from the results of our opponents, it should come from ourselves.”

Quarterback Cade Klubnik reinforced Wesco’s, as well as fellow freshman T.J. Moore’s, confidence before the games even started.

“I think those dudes already had all the confidence they needed,” Klubnik said. “I feel like they just got to go and display it.”

Clemson, No. 21 in the latest Associated Press Poll, will host NC State on Saturday (noon, ABC).

Wesco Details Decision to Play at Clemson https://theclemsoninsider.com/2024/09/18/wesco-details-decision-to-play-at-clemson/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:51:14 +0000 https://theclemsoninsider.com/?p=636653 CLEMSON- Chalk up one more for the Clemson culture.

It’s a culture that has been raved about going back many years by players, coaches and recruits. It is a culture that is still attracting blue-chip talent despite the ever-changing landscape in college football and the shift towards a more transactional world, where many players make decisions based on the best financial offer.

However, there are still players out there that are looking for some of the other things that make college life so special to go along with the NIL opportunities. There are still some that see the value in a degree and freshman wideout Bryant Wesco is one of those players.

It was the culture that Dabo Swinney has cultivated inside the Clemson program that attracted him to the Tigers and ultimately won the former 5-star recruit over.

“That was a big part of what separated it most,” Wesco said. “I probably wouldn’t have chosen any other school other than (Clemson) to play football.”

At Clemson, part of the focus is preparing players for life after football, whenever that might be, and that was something Wesco could not overlook.

“Here it was more than football,” Wesco said. “It was about academics. It was about faith. It was about what are you going to do if you don’t make it to the NFL. They were just more focused on your well-being as a person than a football player. That was really what drove me to Clemson and brought me here.”

Wesco was a consensus Top 100 player coming out of high school and one of the top receiver prospects in his class. Despite playing in a triple option offense at Midlothian (TX), many teams around the country wanted him. Southern Cal, Tennessee, Oregon and Texas, just to name a few.

At the end of the day, Wesco would decide Clemson was the best fit. He committed to the Tigers in the summer of 2023 just after attending the big official visit weekend.

Since arriving on campus back in January, the experience has been everything he expected and then some.

“And more. It’s been a lot,” Wesco said. “All the things they show you on the visits and they show you when they are recruiting you, that is what you get when you are here. it is nothing any different.”
