FIFA has opened proceedings against Argentina over the events of their game against the Netherlands.
A number of encounters happened during the game, beginning with referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz booking four people, including Netherlands substitute Wout Weghorst and Argentina assistant coach Walter Samuel, just before half-time.
Normal time also ended with a melee near the Netherlands bench, and there was a further argument after full-time, when Argentina won the penalty shootout after 2-2 draw.
By the end of the game, Lahoz had handed out 17 yellow cards and one red card after the final whistle.
FIFA has now released a statement: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association due to potential breaches of articles 12 (Misconduct of players and officials) and 16 (Order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code during the Netherlands v. Argentina FIFA World Cup match that took place on 9 December.
“Additionally, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Dutch Football Association due to potential breaches of article 12 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in relation to the same match.”
Argentina will take on Croatia in the World Cup semi-final on Tuesday.
