‘Every payment aggregator should be scared of Phonepe’

Fair point, Srikanth. So far even the monetise elsewhere and specifically via ads hypothesis has not played out that great. With 500 mln users they should ideally already be able to monetise it, but the revenues show that hasn’t been the case. Given how Instagram and others are able to monetise with similar number of users, the ad business should already be humming, isn't it? Case in point Google Pay. Even the mammoth google ad machine has not been able to make much of its UPI app, which is reflected in the (non) investment in the app.

Nobroker wanted to eat Mygate’s lunch. But housing societies had other ideas

Hi Ramprasad, we don't spell companies the way companies do as part of their logo, it is jarring to read. This is a story that's unfolding and we are chronicling it as it unfolds. The takeaway I tried to convey through the story was how NBH tried to push Mygate out of the market. In the process, RWA's expectations of these apps have changed. Now, as the companies now want to nudge societies into paid plans, its gonna be incredibly hard to do, because now RWAs hold the power on dictating ad rates, as they also want to make money out of these apps.

What’s keeping Google Pay down in India

For about a year now, users have been paying for certain UPI transactions in the name of ‘platform fees’. The likes of Paytm and PhonePe levy this fee on select use cases like prepaid phone and DTH recharges, education fees and utility bill payments. These charges are levied irrespective of the payment method (card, digital wallet, or UPI). So users pays for things like phone recharge, for a DTH subscription, for utility payments etc. We wrote about this earlier here https://the-ken.com/story/indias-free-payments-system-isnt-really-free-but-whos-paying/
