ALDI SOUTH GROUP
ALDI is the first discount retailer to join Tony’s Open Chain
ALDI has joined Tony’s Open Chain and developed a chocolate bar that sources beans using the 5 Sourcing Principles. The Open Chain is an initiative by Tony’s Chocolonely, where they invite other chocolate brands to join the Open Chain and work together to change the norm in chocolate. By adopting the 5 Sourcing Principles for a new chocolate bar, ALDI has joined the mission to make chocolate 100% slave-free.

ALDI chocolate loving customers can get excited for a new chocolate bar to be released in spring 2021 in selected ALDI markets. Buying our new chocolate bar will support the cocoa farming communities in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana where the cocoa beans are sourced from.

The cocoa beans are responsibly sourced via the Open Chain using the 5 Sourcing Principles:

  • All cocoa beans are traceable.
  • Farmers receive an additional premium for every kilogram of cocoa beans, enabling them to earn a living income.
  • ALDI promotes professional farmer groups that provide services to farmers to improve their cocoa productivity and quality.
  • ALDI engages in long-term commitments giving the farmers income security and the opportunity to invest in their businesses.
  • ALDI helps farmers to improve yields and diversify their crops.

We aim to achieve positive impact together with the farmers in the partner farmer groups and change the norm in the cocoa industry by working on ending poverty, child labour, and deforestation. ALDI is proud to adopt the 5 Sourcing Principles for the new chocolate bar and join the Open Chain as a Mission Ally. We are looking forward to the journey together.

"I’m proud to welcome ALDI as a new mission ally. Together, we can amplify our impact on the ground. It proves the Open Chain model works and we are ready to scale."
