You can measure behavioral data about your site with Google Ads and Google Analytics. Follow the steps in this article to set up a tag for your Google Ads or Google Analytics account. Learn more about Installing your tag with a website builder or CMS.
The instructions for setting up the Google tag are different for tag IDs starting with "AW-" (usually, Google Ads accounts) and tag IDs starting with "G-" (usually, Google Analytics properties). Follow the instructions below that correspond with your tag.
Before you begin
Google has developed an official WordPress plugin called Site Kit. Site Kit makes it easy to set up and configure key Google products, including Google Tag Manager, giving you authoritative and up-to-date advice on how to succeed on the web. Review the list of Google products you can activate in Site Kit.
If you have a tag starting with "AW-"
Start by copying your conversion tracking ID and sign into your WordPress account. Ensure your site is publicly accessible, meaning your site isn’t in maintenance mode or only accessible through a password.
- Log in to your WordPress website. Make sure your site is publicly accessible (meaning your site isn't in maintenance mode or only accessible through a password).
- Note: If you are unable to install plugins on your WordPress account, follow these steps to Set up your Google tag with WordPress Editor.
- Follow steps 3-9 to download and install the “Site Kit by Google” plugin, which is free to use. If you already have Site Kit, go to step 10.
- In the left navigation menu, click Plugins and then select Add New Plugin.
- Search for "Site Kit by Google".
- Under the "Site Kit by Google" plugin, click Install Now.
- Once the plugin is installed, from the navigation menu on the left, click Plugins and then select Installed Plugins.
- Under "Site Kit by Google", click Activate.
- Once the plugin is activated, click Start setup and follow the instructions.
- Click Sign in with Google and complete the Site Kit setup flow.
- After completing Site Kit set up, from the left navigation menu, select Site Kit, and then click Settings.
- In the Site Kit settings, click Connect More Services.
- Locate the "Google Ads" service and click Set up Ads.
- Paste your Google tag ID in the field below and click Complete setup.
If you have a tag starting with "G-"
- Log in to your WordPress website. Make sure that your site is publicly accessible (your site isn't in maintenance mode or only accessible through a password).
- Note: If you are unable to install plugins on your Wordpress account, follow these steps to Set up your Google tag with WordPress Editor.
- Follow steps 3-14 to download and install the “Site Kit by Google” plugin, which is free to use. If you have already have Site Kit, go to step 15.
- In the navigation menu on the left, click Plugins.
- Click Add New at the top of the “Plugins” page, then search for “Site Kit”.
- Click Install Now on the Site Kit by Google.
- Once the plugin is installed, from the menu on the left, click Plugins.
- Under “Site Kit by Google”, click Activate.
- Once the plugin is activated, on the left-hand side, click Site Kit.
- Check the box “Connect Google Analytics as part of your setup”.
- Click Sign in with Google.
- Select the Google Account with an existing Google Analytics property.
- After you grant permission, click Proceed to verify site ownership.
- Click Allow to grant access to Google account data.
- Click Add site to add the site to Search Console.
- Click Set up Google Analytics.
- Choose your pre-existing analytics property, then click Complete Setup.
