Set the protocol for file sharing on Mac
You can set the protocol your Mac uses to share files. You can share files using Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) or Server Message Block (SMB) protocol.
Note: You can’t share Apple File System (APFS) volumes over Apple Filing Protocol (AFP).
On your Mac, choose Apple menu
> System Preferences, then click Sharing.Make sure File Sharing is selected, then click Options.
Select “Share files and folders using SMB” or “Share files and folders using AFP”. You can select both.
If you’re sharing files with Windows users, select the SMB option, then select the On tickbox for each user who will share files from a Windows computer. You may need to enter the password for that user’s account.
Because passwords for some Windows users may be stored less securely, it’s a good idea to deselect the On tickbox next to each account when it’s not in use. Do this before you turn off file sharing on your Mac. Otherwise, the password is still active and stored in a less secure manner.
