Use Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum or Automatic Mic Mode on your iPhone and iPad
You can adjust the microphone settings to block ambient noises to make your voice even clearer, leave ambient noises unfiltered when you want your voice and all of the sounds around you to be heard, or switch to the most appropriate mode automatically.
Here’s what you’ll need
To use Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum during a FaceTime audio or video call, or in certain third-party apps, you’ll need iOS 15 or later.
To use Voice Isolation during a phone call, you’ll need iOS 16.4 or later. Wide Spectrum is not available in phone calls.
To use the Automatic Mic Mode, you’ll need iOS 18 or later.
You can use Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum on these devices:
iPhone XR, iPhone XS models and later
iPad (8th generation) and later
iPad Pro 13-inch (M4)
All iPad Pro 11-inch models
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later
iPad Air (3rd generation) and later
iPad mini (5th generation) and later
Turn on Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum or Automatic Mic Mode
During your call, swipe down from the top right-hand corner of your screen to open Control Centre.*
Tap [App] Controls.
Under Audio & Video, select a Mic Mode:
Automatic: automatically uses the Mic Mode that’s best for your call type. For example, Automatic uses Voice Isolation to block ambient noises during calls using the receiver, and it uses the Standard mic mode for calls using the speakerphone.
Standard: uses standard voice processing.
Voice Isolation: prioritises your voice and blocks ambient noises.
Wide Spectrum: leaves ambient noises unfiltered.
Your selection will only affect the app you’re using to make the call. Mic Modes persist for that app until you choose a different Mic Mode.
* In supported apps, you can change the Mic Mode before a call.
