Fill out and sign PDF forms in Preview on Mac
In Preview, you can add text and signatures to PDFs.
Fill out a PDF form
Go to the Preview app
on your Mac.Open the PDF form you want to fill out.
Click a field in the form, then type your text.
If a PDF won’t allow you to type directly into the form, you can add a text box instead. Click

Insert contact information in PDF forms
With macOS 14.2 or later, you can use enhanced AutoFill to fill in PDF forms with names, addresses, and other contact information.
Note: Not all PDFs support this feature.
Go to the Preview app
on your Mac.Do one of the following:
Click the AutoFill Form button above the PDF.)
Click a field in the PDF form.
Click your name in the pop-up menu that appears. Matching contact information is filled in from the Contacts app. See Set up your My Card in Contacts.
To enter another person’s information, click Choose Other, click the person’s name, then click any detail in their contact information.
Create and use signatures
To sign PDFs, you can capture your signature using your trackpad, the built-in camera on your Mac, or your iPhone or iPad.
Go to the Preview app
on your Mac.Open the PDF you want to sign.
Click
(if the Markup toolbar isn’t showing), then click 
.If you want to use an existing signature, skip to step 6.
Do one of the following:
Create a signature using your trackpad: Click Trackpad, click the text as prompted, sign your name on the trackpad using your finger, press any key, then click Done. If you don’t like the results, click Clear, then try again.
If your Mac has a Force Touch trackpad, you can press your finger more firmly on the trackpad to sign with a heavier, darker line.
Create a signature using your computer’s built-in camera: Click Camera. Hold your signature (on white paper) facing the camera so that your signature is level with the blue line in the window. When your signature appears in the window, click Done. If you don’t like the results, click Clear, then try again.
Create a signature using your iPhone or iPad: Click Select Device to choose a device (if more than one is available). On your device, use your finger or Apple Pencil (on iPad) to sign your name, then tap Done. If you don’t like the results, tap Clear, then try again.
Note: To use your nearby iPhone or iPad to sign items, it must meet Continuity system requirements. See the Apple Support article System requirements for Continuity features on Apple devices.
If you use VoiceOver, the built-in screen reader on Mac, you can add a description of a signature when you create one. This is especially useful if you create multiple signatures and need to distinguish between them to ensure you use the intended signature. Before you click or tap Done, click the Description pop-up menu, then choose a description, such as Initials, or choose Custom to create your own description.
Click the signature you want to add to your PDF. (If you used VoiceOver to add descriptions of your signatures, VoiceOver reads the descriptions as you navigate the list of signatures.)
Drag the signature to where you want it, then use the handles to adjust the size.
If you use iCloud Drive, your signatures are available on your other Mac computers that have iCloud Drive turned on.
Reply to an email with a PDF attachment
Go to the Mail app
on your Mac.Open an email that includes a PDF attachment, then double-click the attachment to open it in the Preview app
.Note: If the PDF opens in a different app, close the file. Control-click the icon, choose Open With, then choose Preview. See Choose an app to open a file.
Fill out the PDF or make other changes, such as signing it or adding notes.
Choose File > Save, then select Reply to [Sender] or New Mail Message.
An email opens with the PDF already attached.
Delete a saved signature
Go to the Preview app
on your Mac.Click
(if the Markup toolbar isn’t showing).Click
, position the pointer over the signature, then click the X to the right.
The signature is deleted from all apps that use Markup on your Mac computer. If you have iCloud Drive turned on, the signature is also deleted from your other Mac computers that use iCloud Drive.
