About HDMI Passthrough
When using an audio receiver connected through HDMI, you may want to turn on Prefer HDMI Passthrough. Passthrough transmits the original encoded bitstream over HDMI connections.
Passthrough is supported for Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus (EAC-3) and Dolby Atmos (EAC-3 JOC) bitstreams.
Passthrough is available in Apple Music, QuickTime Player and the Apple TV app on Mac with Apple silicon, and a built-in HDMI port or a supported USB-C to HDMI adapter.
If you are using built-in speakers, turn passthrough off.
If you have a receiver connected over HDMI and would like to listen to supported Dolby multichannel or Atmos formats over HDMI, turn passthrough on and select the HDMI device in the sound output settings.
Note: While using HDMI passthrough, additional audio output uses the previous setting for sound output.
