Siri on your Mac
Use Siri on your MacBook Pro to do everyday tasks and find information. For example, you can schedule meetings, change settings, get answers, send messages, place calls, and add items to your calendar. If you turn on the “Listen for” option in Siri settings, you can activate Siri with your voice when you say “Hey Siri” or “Siri,” and immediately speak your request.
Throughout this guide, you can find examples of how you could use Siri—they look like this:
Siri: Say to Siri:
“How do I get home from here?”
“How high is Mount Whitney?”
“Create a new grocery list.”
“Show me my reminders.”
“What time is it in Paris?”
Note: To use Siri, your Mac must be connected to the internet. Siri may not be available in all languages or in all areas, and features may vary by area.
Turn on Siri. Open System Settings, click Apple Intelligence & Siri in the sidebar, turn on Siri, then click Enable. If you enabled Siri during setup, you can also press and hold the Dictation/Siri (F5) key on your keyboard to open Siri. You can customize other Siri settings, such as the language and voice to use and whether to show Siri in the menu bar.
Tip: You can add the Siri icon to the menu bar by selecting that option in Control Center settings. Click or to use Siri.
Hey Siri or Siri. On your MacBook Pro, you can simply say “Hey Siri” or “Siri” to get responses to your requests. Open System Settings, click Apple Intelligence & Siri, click the pop-up menu next to “Listen for,” then choose an option. Follow the onscreen instructions to finish setting up “Hey Siri” or “Siri.”
When this option is on and you turn on “Allow Siri when locked,” you can also use Siri even if your Mac is locked or in sleep.
For convenience, Siri doesn’t respond when the lid to your MacBook Pro is closed. If the lid is closed and connected to an external display, you can still activate Siri from the icon in the menu bar.
Activate Siri. Click or in the menu bar. You can also press and hold the Dictation/Siri key (F5) on a Magic Keyboard, or use the keyboard shortcut selected in Siri settings.
Tip: To learn about more ways you can use Siri, ask “What can you do?” at any time, or see the Apple Siri website.
Type to Siri. Type your requests to Siri instead of speaking them. Click Accessibility in System Settings, then click Siri and turn on “Type to Siri.” If Apple Intelligence is turned on, you can automatically type Siri requests—just click .
Show captions. Show what Siri says on screen. Open System Settings, click Apple Intelligence & Siri, then click Siri Responses and turn on “Always show Siri captions.” You can also turn on “Always show speech” to have Siri transcribe your requests. If Apple Intelligence is turned on, click Siri Responses and turn on “Always show requests” to show what Siri says on the screen.
