Adjust generators in Final Cut Pro for iPad
After you add a generator clip to the timeline, you can adjust the clip’s settings in the inspector.
Adjust the duration of a generator clip
Generator clips are added to the timeline at their default duration, anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds, depending on the clip. You can change a generator clip’s duration and position in the timeline the same way you would for any other video clip.
In Final Cut Pro for iPad, open a project.
In the timeline, tap the edge of a background or object clip, then do one of the following:
Drag the yellow handle on the edge of the clip left or right.
Open the jog wheel, tap next to the jog wheel, then drag in the jog wheel to lengthen or shorten the clip.
Tap Inspect in the lower-left corner of the screen, tap the purple duration number at the top of the inspector, then use the keypad to enter a new duration in any of the time fields (hours: minutes: seconds: frames).
Adjust a background clip in the inspector
In Final Cut Pro for iPad, open a project.
In the timeline, tap a background clip, then drag the playhead over the clip (to see the result of your adjustments in the viewer).
Tap Inspect in the lower-left corner of the screen, then tap at the top of the inspector.
Adjust any of available controls to modify the clip’s opacity, blend mode, color conversion, or graphics HDR level (to boost the intensity of SDR graphics, such as pattern backgrounds, so they better match the brightness of HDR clips in your project).
As you make adjustments in the inspector, the image in the viewer updates.
Adjust an object clip in the inspector
In Final Cut Pro for iPad, open a project.
In the timeline, tap an object clip (such as a shape), then drag the playhead over the clip (to see the result of your adjustments in the viewer).
Tap Inspect in the lower-left corner of the screen, then tap at the top of the inspector.
Adjust the object’s appearance using any of the following controls:
Opacity, Blend Mode: Use these controls to modify how the object and the clip below it in the timeline are combined in the viewer.
Color Conversion: To override the automatic color space settings in Final Cut Pro, tap next to Color Conversion, tap Choose Manually, then tap an option. See Change color space settings.
Build In: If the object has built-in animation, use this control to turn the animation on or off.
Color: To change the object’s color, tap the color well, then choose a new color.
Shape options: If you added the Basic Shape object to the timeline, additional options become available to choose a different shape (Diamond, Hexagon, and so on) and to add a fill color, outline color, rounded corners, drop shadow, and more.
Graphics HDR Level: Drag the slider to the right to boost the intensity of SDR objects so they better match the brightness of HDR clips in your project.
As you make adjustments in the inspector, the image in the viewer updates.
Copy format settings between generator clips
You can copy the format adjustments you’ve made to one generator clip and paste them into another.
In Final Cut Pro for iPad, open a project.
In the timeline, tap a generator clip that you’ve modified.
Tap Inspect in the lower-left corner of the screen, then tap at the top of the inspector.
In the inspector, tap next to Format, then tap Copy All Settings.
In the timeline, tap another generator clip.
In the inspector, tap next to Format, then tap Paste Format Settings.
All of the settings from the first clip are pasted into the second clip.
Reset the format settings in a generator clip
After you make modifications to a generator clip’s settings, you can easily restore the default format settings.
In Final Cut Pro for iPad, open a project.
In the timeline, tap a generator clip that you’ve modified.
Tap Inspect in the lower-left corner of the screen, then tap at the top of the inspector.
Tap at the top of the inspector, then tap Reset Format Settings.
The clip returns to its default format settings.
Tip: For best playback quality, render the generator clip after you add or adjust it.
