Wallpaper settings on Mac
On your Mac, use Wallpaper settings to change the picture or colour shown on your desktop (the background area of the screen).
Browse through the options below for details about customising your settings.
To open these settings, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Wallpaper in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

Option | Description |

Current wallpaper thumbnail | The wallpaper currently used on your Mac. If you’ve created additional desktop spaces on your Mac or you’ve connected more than one display:

Add Photo | Choose an image as your wallpaper. Images you’ve chosen are shown below Your Photos at the bottom of the window. Choose how you want the image to fill the screen from the pop-up menu next to the current wallpaper thumbnail. You can click the Rotate button below Your Photos to shuffle through the images. Choose how long to show each image from the pop-up menu next to the current wallpaper thumbnail, and select Randomly to mix the order. |
Add Folder or Album | Add a collection of images to choose as your wallpaper. Images from the chosen folder or album are shown at the bottom of the window. Choose how you want the images to fill the screen from the pop-up menu next to the current wallpaper thumbnail. You can click the Rotate button below the folder or album name to shuffle through the images. Choose how long to show each image from the pop-up menu next to the current wallpaper thumbnail, and select Randomly to mix the order. |
Dynamic Wallpapers | Choose an image as your wallpaper. From the pop-up menu next to the current wallpaper thumbnail, choose an appearance:
A Down arrow next to a Dynamic Wallpaper name means the image needs to be downloaded. Click the image to download. |
Landscape, Cityscape, Underwater and Earth aerials | Choose an aerial image as your wallpaper. Turn on “Show as screen saver” to use a slow-motion aerial to hide the desktop when you’re away from your Mac. A Down arrow next to an aerial name means the image needs to be downloaded. Click the image to download. |
Shuffle Aerials | Choose to rotate through several aerial images as your wallpaper. From the pop-up menu next to Shuffle at the top of the window, choose how often you want to rotate through the aerials. Turn on “Show as screen saver” to use slow-motion aerials to hide the desktop when you’re away from your Mac. |
Pictures | Choose an image as your wallpaper. A Down arrow next to a picture means the image needs to be downloaded. Click the picture to download. |
Colours | Choose a colour as your wallpaper. Click the Rotate button to shuffle through the available colours as your wallpaper. Click the Add button to add a colour. |
Photos, Albums, Folders | Choose from photos, folders and albums that you’ve added as your wallpaper. |
