MacBook Pro (14-inch, Nov 2023) Touch ID Board

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

ESD-safe tweezers
Kapton tape (922-1731)
Nylon probe (black stick) (922-5065)
Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm) (923-0448)
Torque driver (teal, 0.75 kgf cm) (923-08085)
Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit (923-08468)
Touch ID alignment kit (923-03032)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

This procedure requires System Configuration. After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, learn how to initiate the System Configuration process.

Important: This procedure may require a Touch ID board shim kit, which only comes with a replacement Touch ID board. It's not a separate orderable part.

Removal

Stand the computer on its side with the display open. Then press the Touch ID button a few times to sense its movement.
Close the display and place the computer on the table display-side down.
Gently peel the Touch ID board flex cable from the Y-shaped cowling.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to loosen one 3IP screw (923-06940) from the Y-shaped cowling.
- Caution: To avoid damaging the screw, don’t loosen the screw more than one counterclockwise rotation.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove one 3IP screw (923-06940) from the Y-shaped cowling.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to slide the Y-shaped cowling from under the loose screw. Then remove the cowling from the top case and save it for reassembly.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the six 3IP screws from the Touch ID board flexible cowling.
- Two middle 3IP screws (923-06942) (1)
- Four outer 3IP screws (923-06955) (2)
Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the Touch ID board flexible cowling from the top case. Save it for reassembly.
- Important: Note the orientation of the cowling for reassembly.
Open the display and stand the computer on its side.
Support the Touch ID board (1) as you route the Touch ID flex cable (2) through the slot in the top case.
- Important:
  - If the Touch ID board wasn’t clicking properly before removal or you’re installing a replacement Touch ID board, continue to removal step 11 to remove the Touch ID shim.
  - If you're reinstalling the original Touch ID shim, skip to reassembly step 5.
Place the computer right side up. Spread the tips of the ESD-safe tweezers and use one tip to remove the shim from the circular recess under the Touch ID board.
- Caution: Ensure that the flex cables are positioned inside the top case. Then place the computer on a clean surface to avoid damaging internal parts.
- Note: The shim is adhered to the top case.

Reassembly

Important:
- If you’re replacing the Touch ID board or adjusting the feel of the button press, you may need to replace the Touch ID shim. Follow reassembly steps 1 through 4 to install a replacement shim.
- If you’re replacing the Touch ID board and using the original shim, or reinstalling the original Touch ID board, skip to reassembly step 5.

Place the computer right side up with the display still open.
- Caution: Ensure that flex cables are positioned inside the top case. Then place the computer on a clean surface to avoid damaging internal parts.
Use the ESD-safe tweezers to pick up the medium Touch ID shim from the shim kit.
- Note: The shim is black on the adhesive side and silver on the opposite side.
Align the Touch ID shim in the recessed circle in the top case with the adhesive side down.
Gently press the Touch ID shim for 15 seconds to adhere it to the top case.
Open the display and stand the computer on its side.
Route the Touch ID board flex cable through the slot in the top case. Then position the Touch ID board in the opening in the top case.
- Important: If you’re installing a replacement Touch ID board, don’t remove the protective film or adhesive release liners yet.
Close the display and place the computer on the table display-side down.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to position the Touch ID board flexible cowling as shown.
- Important: Ensure that the Touch ID board flexible cowling is installed right side up.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to partially reinstall the following six 3IP screws:
- Important: Stop tightening the screws when the screw heads touch the Touch ID board flexible cowling and before you feel resistance.
- Two middle 3IP screws (923-06942) (1)
- Four outer 3IP screws (923-06955) (2)
Place the computer right side up with the display open.
Center the Touch ID button so that the spaces on each side appear equal and the Touch ID button aligns with the function row keys.
Then set two Y-shaped alignment tools against the Touch ID button. Secure the Y-shaped tools in the corner edges with Kapton tape.
- Note: If you’re installing a replacement Touch ID board, remove the protective film from the Touch ID button.
Ensure that the Touch ID button is held in place by the Y-shaped tools as you close the display. Then place the computer on the table display-side down.
Use the teal torque driver and 3IP bit to fully reinstall the two middle 3IP screws.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to partially reinstall the top left 3IP screw.
- Important: Stop tightening the screw when you feel resistance and before the torque driver clicks.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to fully reinstall the four 3IP screws in the order shown.
Stand the computer on its side with the display open.
Look directly over the Touch ID button. The spaces on each side should appear equal, and the Touch ID button should align with the function row keys.
- Important:
  - If the gaps around the sides are equal, skip to reassembly step 27.
  - If the gaps around the sides are unequal, continue with steps 19 through 26 to realign the Touch ID button.
Keep the display open with the computer on its side. Rotate the computer to access the screws.
Use the teal torque driver and 3IP bit to loosen the two middle 3IP screws.
Remove the Kapton tape and Y-shaped alignment tools.
Center the Touch ID button so that the spaces on each side appear equal, and the Touch ID button aligns with the function row keys.
Set the two Y-shaped alignment tools against the Touch ID button as shown. Secure the Y-shaped tools in the corner edges with Kapton tape.
Keep the display open with the computer on its side. Rotate the computer to access the other side.
Use the teal torque driver and 3IP bit to fully reinstall the two middle 3IP screws.
Look directly over the Touch ID button. The spaces on each side should appear equal, and the Touch ID button should align with the function row keys.
- Important:
  - If the gaps around the sides are equal, continue to reassembly step 27.
  - If the gaps around the sides are unequal, repeat removal steps 2 through 10. Then repeat the reassembly steps.
Remove the Kapton tape and Y-shaped alignment tools.
Press the Touch ID button to ensure that you can feel it click.
- Important:
  - If the Touch ID button feels too loose, repeat all removal steps. Then repeat the reassembly steps with a larger Touch ID shim.
  - If the Touch ID button feels too stiff or doesn't click, repeat all removal steps. Then repeat the reassembly steps with a smaller Touch ID shim.
Close the display and place the computer on the table display-side down.
Use the ESD-safe tweezers to position the Y-shaped cowling in the top case (1). Ensure that the notch is under the loose screw (2).
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to fully reinstall the two 3IP screws (923-06940) into the Y-shaped cowling.
Gently press the Touch ID board flex cable to adhere it to the Y-shaped cowling.
- Important: If the Touch ID board flex cable doesn't align with the Y-shaped cowling, part of the flex cable may be trapped between the Touch ID button and the top case. Repeat removal steps 1 through 10, then follow reassembly steps 5 through 32 to ensure proper alignment of the flex cable and cowling.
