Mac Pro (2023) Antennas
Before You Begin
Remove the following parts before you begin:
Housing
Apple Thunderbolt input/output board and Apple input/output card
Logic board
Handles
Tools
Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)
Antenna tool
ESD-safe tweezers
Scissors
Sticky notes (3 by 3 inches)
Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit
Note: You can remove the logic board with the speaker and SSD modules installed.
Removal
Place the space frame on its side as shown. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the four 5IP screws (923-03457) from the antenna connector cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.
Caution: Avoid damaging the antenna coaxial cables and connectors when handling them.
Use the antenna tool to lift the ends of the four antenna coaxial cables off the connectors on the top input/output (I/O) board.
Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the six 5IP screws (923-03422) from the antenna coaxial cable routing clips.
Note: The image shows the antenna connector cowling and antenna coaxial cables still installed. However, you must remove both parts before you remove the screws.
Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the eight 5IP screws (923-03424) that secure the antennas to the space frame.
Note: The image shows the antenna coaxial cable routing clips still installed. However, you must remove them before you remove the screws.
Gently peel the polyester film tape off the antenna coaxial cable. Loosely apply the polyester film tape on the top half of the space frame top plate ring until reassembly.
Place the space frame on its feet. Remove both antennas from the space frame and guide the antenna coaxial cables through the holes.
Reassembly
Route the antenna coaxial cables through the holes and position both antennas in the space frame.
Place the space frame on its side as shown. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to partially reinstall the eight 5IP screws (923-03424) into the space frame.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to position the ends of the four antenna coaxial cables over the connectors as shown.
Important: Ensure that the two inner antenna coaxial cables are routed on top of the outer antenna coaxial cable.
Use the blunt end of the antenna tool to press the ends of the four antenna coaxial cables to the connectors in the order shown.
Position the antenna connector cowling over the ends of the antenna coaxial cables.
Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 11.5 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the four 5IP screws (923-03457) into the antenna connector cowling.
Keep the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver value at 11.5 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the six 5IP screws (923-03422) to secure the antenna coaxial cable routing clips to the space frame top plate.
Note: Ensure that the antenna coaxial cable routing clips are positioned in the recesses in the space frame top plate.
Reapply the polyester film tape over the antenna coaxial cables.
Place the space frame on its feet to temporarily reinstall the housing.
Flip up the housing latch and rotate it 90 degrees counterclockwise to unlock the housing. Use the latch to slowly lower the housing over the space frame.
Rotate the latch 90 degrees clockwise to the locked position and flip down the latch.
Check the antennas to see if they align with the housing cutouts.
Use scissors to cut a stack of two sticky notes in half. To ensure antenna alignment, insert the shorter edges of the sticky notes in the gap between the housing cutout and the antenna. Ensure that the gap between the antenna and the cutout is equal.
Repeat step 13 to ensure the alignment of the other antenna. Then remove the sticky notes.
If the antennas are aligned, skip to step 17. If they aren’t aligned, reach into the housing through the opening to check the eight 5IP screws on the space frame top plate. Ensure that the 5IP screws are only partially reinstalled.
Repeat steps 13 and 14. Then continue to step 17.
Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 16 Ncm.
Reach into the housing through the opening and use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to fully reinstall the eight 5IP screws into the space frame top plate.
Important: If you’re unable to reach the screws closest to the housing, fully reinstall the four inner screws, two for each antenna.
Remove the housing and ensure that the eight 5IP screws are fully reinstalled.
Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:
