Before downloading new software, it's a good idea to back up your device to make sure that you have a copy of your important information. Choose your backup method.
Check compatibility
You will only see updates that are compatible with your current software version. If you have not downloaded the most current release, you will not see the option to download the latest release.
iPadOS 18 is compatible with these iPad models:
iPad Pro (M4)
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)
iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later)
iPad Air (M2)
iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
iPad (7th generation and later)
iPad mini (5th generation and later)
Download iPadOS 18
When you download the latest version of iPadOS, your data and settings remain unchanged.
Update iPad automatically
To turn on automatic updates:
Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
Turn on iPadOS Updates below Automatically Install and Automatically Download.
When an update is available, iPad downloads and installs the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You’re notified before an update is installed.
To turn off automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
Update iPad manually
To check for and download software updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
The screen shows the currently installed version of iPadOS and whether an update is available.
