Apple Studio Display: Input/Output Issues

Troubleshooting USB-C issues

Identify issues

  • USB-C devices aren’t recognized or don’t receive power when connected to the display’s USB-C ports

Try quick troubleshooting steps

  1. Ensure that you’re using the Studio Display Thunderbolt 3 port to connect to a compatible Mac.

    • Note: On Studio Display, the USB-C port with a lightning icon supports Thunderbolt 3 — connect a functioning, compatible Mac or iPad to this port. The other ports are USB-C only and used for data and accessory charging. Refer to the user guide for more details.

  2. Ensure that you’re using the display with a Mac that has a compatible Thunderbolt port. Refer to Connect a display to your Mac.

  3. Ensure that you’re using a functioning, compatible Thunderbolt cable to connect the display and computer. Refer to About the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) Cable and Adapters for the Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, or USB-C port on your Mac.

  4. Inspect all USB-C ports and housing openings on the display for any signs of damage or debris that may be blocking the connection.

  5. If you find any debris in these ports, gently clean each connector using a small, nonmetallic, soft-bristled brush. Ensure that the brush is clean and dry. Gently brush out lint or debris. Use just enough bristles to fit inside the connector. Twist the bristles to loosen and lift out debris. Brush debris away from the opening to avoid brushing debris into the connector. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe away the loosened debris.

    • Important: Unplug all cables and ensure the display is off. Don't use aerosol sprays, solvents, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide that might damage the finish. Don’t use any metal objects to clear debris or obstructions, as this can short the connector and cause damage. Avoid getting moisture in any openings, and don't spray liquid directly on the display. Don't use compressed air.

  6. Plug the display power cord into an electrical outlet. Use a functioning, compatible Thunderbolt cable to connect the display to a compatible Mac. Turn on the computer, listen for the display fan, and verify that an image appears on the display to ensure that both the computer and display are on.

Run manual and diagnostic tests

If your issue wasn’t resolved by following a support article or checking for potential causes, run these diagnostic and manual tests to help isolate the cause of the issue:

  1. Run the Display Resource Inspector (DRI) diagnostic suite.

    • Note: This diagnostic suite will check for the presence of USB interfaces and cameras, and will test functionality of the speakers, microphones, and camera.

  2. Connect a functioning, compatible mouse or keyboard to each USB-C port on the display to verify basic USB-C port functionality.

  3. Ensure that the Mac recognizes the connection with both orientations of the connector by flipping it over and reconnecting it.

Open and inspect the display

If your issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following support articles or running diagnostics tests, refer to the display's repair manual to open and inspect the display. A damaged or out-of-place part may be causing one of the issues.

Replace the part

If your issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following the previous steps, replace the affected USB-C board.

Important: Follow repair manual procedures and verify that both USB-C boards have been installed correctly. The USB-C boards are marked near the barcode with "L" and "R" to indicate the left and right USB-C board. Incorrect installation such as reversal of the two USB-C boards will prevent the display from connecting to a Mac.
