iPhone 13 Pro Max Top Speaker (mmWave Antenna)
Before You Begin
Warning
Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.
Important
If your iPhone doesn’t have an mmWave antenna, follow the instructions in Top Speaker.
mmWave antenna
Remove the following part before you begin:
Tools
6.7-inch repair tray
ESD-safe tweezers
JCIS bit
Micro stix bit
Nitrile or lint-free gloves
Nylon probe (black stick)
SIM eject tool
Super screw bit
Torque driver (black, 0.35 kgf cm)
Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)
Torque driver (gray, 0.55 kgf cm)
Torque driver (green, 0.45 kgf cm)
Important
A battery protective cover is included with a replacement battery, top speaker (mmWave Antenna), or TrueDepth camera.
Caution
To avoid damaging the lenses, don’t touch the TrueDepth camera or nearby parts.
Removal
Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the Lightning connector facing the cutout.
Use a torque driver and the Micro stix bit to remove the four trilobe screws from the camera cowling. Hold the camera cowling in place as you remove the center screw. Set aside the screws.
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the crosshead screw from the camera cowling. Set aside the screw.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to tilt up the camera cowling from the left side (1). Then slide the cowling tabs out of the slots on the right side of the enclosure (2). Save the cowling for reassembly.
Caution: Avoid the grounding spring on the camera cowling.
Use a torque driver and Micro stix bit to remove two trilobe screws from the logic board cowling. Set aside the screws.
Remove the logic board cowling and save it for reassembly.
Lift the ends of the 13 flex cables off the connectors on the logic board in the order shown.
Use a torque driver and super screw bit to remove the two super screws from the logic board. Set aside the screws.
Put on the gloves.
Gently hold the camera flex cables together (1) and lift the cameras out of the enclosure (2). Place the cameras on clean surface with the lenses faceup.
Use the black stick to break the adhesive between the mmWave antenna flex cable and the camera well.
Remove the enclosure from the repair tray.
Insert a paper clip or SIM-eject tool into the hole next to the SIM tray.
Push the paper clip or SIM-eject tool toward the enclosure to eject the SIM tray. Then remove the SIM tray and save it for reassembly.
Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the Lightning connector facing the cutout.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to push the SIM tray ejector (1) into its original position (2).
Place the battery protective cover on top of the battery.
Lift up the logic board from the bottom end. Then gently rotate it 45 degrees to rest it on the battery protective cover.
Caution
Don’t damage the flex cables.
Don’t damage the logic board while moving it. If damage occurs, replace the iPhone.
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the crosshead screw from the grounding strap on the top speaker. Set aside the screw.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the grounding strap.
Important: If you plan to reinstall the original speaker, set aside the grounding strap for reassembly.
Caution: Don’t damage the grounding springs on the grounding strap as you remove it. If damage occurs, replace the grounding strap.
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the crosshead screw (1) from the top speaker. Set aside the screw.
Use a torque driver and the super screw bit to remove the two super screws (2) from the top speaker. Set aside the screws.
Remove the top speaker from the enclosure.
Reassembly
Put on the gloves.
Inspect the TrueDepth camera. Ensure that the top edge of the TrueDepth camera is under the lip of the enclosure.
Caution: If the TrueDepth camera is positioned incorrectly, use the black stick to move it into the correct position.
Tilt down the top speaker and lower it in the enclosure.
Caution: Ensure that the gasket is in place on the speaker’s top vent and not torn or damaged. If the gasket is damaged, replace the top speaker.
Use the blue torque driver and super screw bit to install two new super screws (923-06271) (1) (923-06653) (2) into the top speaker.
Use the green torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-06269) into the top speaker.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to position the grounding strap on the top speaker.
Caution: Don’t bend or damage the grounding springs on the grounding strap.
Use the green torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-06269) into the grounding strap.
Carefully rotate the logic board back over the enclosure and remove the battery protective cover. Lower the logic board into the enclosure.
Caution: Ensure that no flex cables are trapped under the logic board.
Press the ends of the 11 flex cables to the connectors in the order shown.
Follow camera reassembly steps 1 through 9. Then continue to step 11.
Use the gray torque driver and super screw bit to install two new super screws (923-06292) (1), (923-06293) (2) into the logic board.
Position the logic board cowling in the enclosure. Use the black torque driver and Micro stix bit to install two new trilobe screws (923-06284) (1) (923-06286) (2) into the cowling.
Remove the enclosure from the repair tray.
Press the SIM tray back into the side of the enclosure.
Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the Lightning connector facing the cutout.
Reinstall the following part to complete reassembly:
