Stripe accelerates growth in Japan with new solutions for ambitious enterprises
- Stripe expands its product suite for domestic and global Japanese companies.
- Japan becomes the first market outside the US and UK to benefit from Stripe Identity.
- Sony Honda Mobility and DeNA become the latest Japanese enterprises to move to Stripe.
TOKYO—Stripe, a financial infrastructure platform for businesses, today announced a range of new products in Japan that provide more tools for reaching consumers and growing revenue, domestically and abroad.
In response to strong local growth, with payment volume on Stripe in Japan increasing 55% in 2023, Stripe is further investing in products tailored to Japanese companies and enterprises selling to Japan. The new products and features include the ability to work with multiple payment processors through the Vault and Forward API, installments for consumer payment flexibility, and enhanced verification through Stripe Identity. The announcements took place at Stripe Tour Tokyo, the company’s annual internet economy conference in Japan.
“Stripe’s growth in Japan is accelerating, and we’re increasing our investment with new products tailored specifically for this market to make doing business much easier. We’re also opening up our platform so Japanese enterprises can use Stripe alongside their existing tools,” said Eileen O’Mara, chief revenue officer at Stripe.
Stripe launched in Japan in 2016 and now serves many of Japan’s leading enterprises, including Toyota, Nikkei, ANA Group, Tokyu, Morisawa, ORIX, and more. Stripe also supports global companies such as X, Shopify, Uber, Atlassian, and others that are extending their business into Japan.
Allowing Stripe products to be used with other payments providers
At Stripe Tour Tokyo, Stripe announced that three of its most widely used products—the Optimized Checkout Suite (OCS), Stripe Billing, and Stripe Radar—will be available to Japanese companies processing payments with other providers. This is particularly relevant for large enterprises that were unable to take advantage of Stripe’s product suite without breaching other long-term contract commitments.
Installment payments with faster payouts
Coming soon, Japanese businesses on Stripe will be able to offer card installment payments to their customers. In Japan, consumers can choose to pay the full purchase amount at once (ikkatsu barai, or “one-time payment”) or in installments. Previously, businesses might not have received their funds for up to six months; Stripe’s solution now shortens this to four business days.
Stripe already supports a growing list of local payment methods such as Konbini convenience store payments, Furikomi bank transfers, and JCB cards. These are part of OCS, which uses machine learning to surface the most relevant payment methods to buyers. OCS supports more than 100 payment methods and Link, Stripe’s accelerated checkout offering. A recent analysis found that businesses migrating to the Optimized Checkout Suite saw an 11.9% increase in revenue on average, as more shoppers are converted into buyers.
A quarter of Japan-based businesses on Stripe sell internationally. Today, Stripe introduced Adaptive Pricing to simplify global expansion for Japanese companies. Stripe automatically localizes prices for buyers in more than 50 countries at checkout, showing local currencies and relevant local payment methods.
Stripe Identity to reduce fraud
Beginning today, Japanese businesses can use Stripe Identity to smoothly and securely verify users from over 120 countries in just a few seconds. This is Stripe’s first expansion of Identity outside of the US and UK. The launch is in response to demand from Japanese businesses for enhanced identity verification to combat fraud. In 2023, industry losses in Japan from credit card fraud reached an all-time high of 54 billion yen, a 20% increase from the previous year, and nearly a five-fold increase over the past decade.
Japanese enterprises adopt Stripe
Stripe also announced that Sony Honda Mobility and DeNA are the latest Japanese enterprises to adopt its products. Sony Honda Mobility, a mobility tech joint venture between Sony and Honda, has selected Stripe to help manage customer data and create a billing and payment system for sales of its new electric vehicle brand, AFEELA.
“Sony Honda Mobility aims to expand its mobility services by establishing a flexible customer data management and payment system to build a continuous relationship of trust with its customers. Stripe offers a variety of payment methods, tax collection support, subscription billing, and credit card fraud prevention seamlessly across the globe. Sony Honda Mobility will provide highly reliable services through Stripe’s diverse payment solutions,” said Izumi Kawanishi, representative director, president and chief operating officer, Sony Honda Mobility.
DeNA, a Japanese provider of mobile portal and ecommerce websites, will use Stripe to power its VTuber application, IRIAM—a popular, virtual live-streaming application.
“Stripe makes implementation and testing easy, allowing us to onboard quickly. It also enables us to provide a smooth payment experience for our customers, while at the same time managing fraud reduction. In the future, we aim to improve the payments experience not only in our digital businesses, but also across our offline organizations,” said Kenta Sugahara, head of group executive solution unit, DeNA.
Stripe is recognized as a Leader in the Forrester Wave™ for Merchant Payment Providers, as well as in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Retail Online Payment Platform Software Providers, ahead of any other vendor.
