Carotid-vertebrobasilar Anastomoses with Reference to Their Segmental Property

Abstract: The primitive carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomoses are primitive embryonic cerebral vessels that temporarily provide arterial supply from the internal carotid artery to the longitudinal neural artery, the future vertebrobasilar artery in the hindbrain. Four types known are the trigeminal, otic, hypoglossal, and proatlantal intersegmental arteries. The arteries are accompanied by their corresponding nerves and resemble an intersegmental pattern. These vessels exist in the very early period of cerebral arterial d… Show more

“…A posterior communicating artery infundibulum is not uncommon and can be seen up to 17% of the time. 10 In addition, fetal origin (posterior communicating artery has the same diameter as the PCA) of the PCA is relatively common.…”

“…These consist of primitive temporary embryonic intersegmental arteries accompanied by their corresponding nerves that fail to involute . In the embryo, these anastomoses provide arterial supply from the internal carotid artery (ICA) to the longitudinal neural artery, which will become the vertebrobasilar artery in the hindbrain following full development.…”

“…There are four known types which include a persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA), a persistent hypoglossal artery (PHA), a proatlantal intersegmental artery, and the least common or the least reported, a persistent primitive otic artery. All of these arteries are accompanied by their corresponding nerves and resemble an intersegmental pattern …”
