Sustainable Airports Platform

The Sustainable Airports Platform is an RSB initiative that brings together airports and other relevant stakeholders. This done through a series of virtual meetings, expert presentations, and both online and offline discussions to collaborate in developing and exchanging knowledge on sustainability and the role of airports in the growing SAF economy.

The initiative is linked to ALIGHT, an EU-funded Smart Airport project led by Copenhagen Airport and comprising 16 European partners, including RSB, that aims to develop best practice solutions for including the supply, integration and use of SAF and smart energy at airports.

About the Sustainable Airports Platform

The Sustainable Airports Platform is open to RSB’s members, who are invited to join the platform as part of the many benefits of RSB membership. It is also open to partners from project ALIGHT, airport partners of fellow EU-funded projects on sustainable airports, and targeted external stakeholders on invitation.

Why an airports platform?

Airports have a critical role to encourage the use of SAF. However, only a few airports currently have a consistent supply of SAF, and there is still some uncertainty on the role airports should and aspire to play within the SAF value chain. In response to this, the Sustainable Airports Platform is a place for structured discussion that leads to the development of informative tools and guidance, and joint recommendations.

Activities

The platform kicked off in 2022, and led to the development of a SAF Sustainability Guidance for Airports, covering aspects such as the role of airports in the SAF economy, how SAF contributes to airports’ emission reductions, and how SAF is currently included in airports’ sustainability strategies.

In 2023, the platform has deepened its work around SAF sustainability and the role of airports in supporting the SAF economy – focusing on the impact that SAF use by airlines has on an airport’s air quality.

RSB Approach

RSB’s multi-stakeholder membership community is here to support organisations — including industry, civil society, academia and government — to create a just and sustainable transition towards a net-zero carbon, circular and bio-based economy by:

  1. Developing new knowledge and solutions
  2. Sharing wisdom in a pre-competitive space
  3. Shaping revisions to the standard and certification system

All RSB platforms and working groups are conducted in-line with our anti-trust policy and follow an established anti-trust procedure to ensure that our work is in line with best practice in competition law.
