The newly recognized MLV receptor (here called XPR) appears to be polymorphic, with alleles in mouse cells that permit infection only with P-tropic MLV; the alleles for this receptor in heterologous cells (e.g., human) permit infection by both X-tropic and P-tropic MLV. In some cells (e.g., M. dunni), the XPR alleles could be heterozygous.
