Abstract

PIP: By means of an interview investigation of 1856 applicants for pregnancy termination, information was obtained concerning the contraceptive methods employed at the time of conception. On the basis of the information obtained, the numbers of terminations for Denmark as a whole in 1977 were calculated for each of the following methods of contraception: IUD, hormonal, diaphragms, condom, and spermicides without diaphragms. On the basis of our clinical knowledge concerning the efficacy of the methods and on the basis of the sale of various types of contraception in 1977, the termination figure was calculated for each individual method. 1/2 of the terminations were attributable to method failure and only an insignificant fraction were due to consumer error. Of all women of fertile age in Denmark, a total of 1,185,000, only 8% were pregnant in 1977. Between 50-66% had avoided pregnancy while the remainder had not employed contraception or had not been pregnant.
