Do vitamins prevent neural tube defects (and can we find out ethically)?

M B Lipsett et al. Hastings Cent Rep. 1983 Aug.

Abstract

KIE: Proposals have been made to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for a clinical trial to determine the role of vitamin supplements in the prevention of neural tube defects. In view of incomplete British studies suggesting a positive effect, American researchers and ethicists have debated the scientific validity and ethical implications of various research design options. Policy makers are faced with the dilemma that, while a randomized, placebo-controlled study may yield the information required for the establishment of a definitive prevention program, there are ethical problems in withholding apparently safe, inexpensive, and possibly beneficial vitamin supplements from women at risk.
