Abstract

AIDS: AIDSVAX is the only vaccine in phase III efficacy trials, but most experts do not believe that this vaccine is the final word in HIV prevention. Another phase III trial could be at least 3 years away, because no other vaccines are near that stage of development. HIV-1 Delta 4 is a vaccine in development that uses a mutated form of the virus; however, there are public health concerns about introducing a new form of the virus into the population. Canary pox-vector vaccine is discussed and five versions of the vaccine are in early clinical trials. Two DNA vaccines are also being investigated.
