Appreciated Assets/Securities

Appreciated stocks and bonds are, next to online gifts and checks, among the most popular assets donated to Physical Sciences by alumni and friends. Gifts of securities can be a strategically effective way to support UC Irvine and can be transferred directly from your brokerage account to the university's account. A gift of assets/securities may include several tax benefits for the donor.

Planned Gifts

Our legacy starts with how we live our lives. When you consider your legacy, you think of the people, lives and experiences that shaped you, as well as the lives that you have influenced. As you contemplate your legacy, please consider UCI School of Physical Sciences. When you leave us a portion of your estate, you create a lasting legacy while possibly receiving tax advantages and other benefits. A legacy that will help tomorrow's leaders shape the world for the better. As your philanthropic partner, we have provided an overview of some of the tools that may be useful as you consider supporting UCI Physical Sciences. We are committed to working with you and your advisors to find the best giving mechanism for you. Some examples include:

  • Bequest - Estate gifts are simple to establish and allow you the financial flexibility to adjust your plans depending on your priorities. Your support will create a lasting impact for generations to come.
  • Beneficiary Designation - Naming University of California Irvine Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement assets can maximize your philanthropic impact while leaving other less-taxed assets of your estate to your loved ones. We encourage you to contact us so that we can appropriately document how you would like the School of Physical Sciences to use your gift.
  • Charitable IRA Rollover - A gift option that enables you to transfer up to $105,000 directly from your IRA to UC Irvine each year to support any physical sciences area of your choosing, and can mitigate your income tax liability. Individuals aged 70 ½ and older can take advantage of this gift option.
  • Donor Advised Funds - Gifts from your existing DAF account is an effective and impactful way to support UCI Physical Sciences.
  • Appreciated Securities - When you make a gift of appreciated securities such as stocks and bonds, you get a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the assets if you have owned them for more than one year.  You also avoid capital gains tax that you could have owed if you sold the assets.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities - A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract between you and the university. In exchange for a gift of cash or publicly traded stock, the university agrees to make fixed payments to you for the remainder of your life or to a loved one for their life. Once the university's obligation to you has been fulfilled, the remainder is distributed directly to the School of Physical Sciences gift purpose that you have designated.

Do you already have the School of Physical Sciences in your estate plans? Please let us know. We would love to recognize you for your generous support in your lifetime as a member of the UCI Legacy Society and School of Physical Sciences' Circle of Legends. We can also help to ensure that your wishes will be met with regards to your intended gift purpose.
