Os Estados-Membros, as instituições europeias, as associações empresariais, os parceiros sociais e outros intervenientes desenvolveram várias ferramentas e documentos de orientação para ajudar as empresas a efetuarem avaliações dos riscos abrangentes e eficazes. Estas ferramentas representam uma ampla variedade de abordagens à gestão eficaz das substâncias perigosas. Frequentemente, abrangem operações de trabalho específicas, como processos de enchimento e bombeamento de líquidos ou de soldadura. Outras fontes apresentam uma síntese abrangente de um determinado grupo de substâncias, nomeadamente sensibilizantes, ou salientam riscos típicos de determinados setores.

Além disso, para além de apoiarem uma avaliação dos riscos de alta qualidade, a maior parte destas ferramentas incluem boas soluções práticas, explicando como reduzir os riscos em situações profissionais comuns que envolvem a exposição a substâncias perigosas.
