Knicks add Cameron Payne to bolster guard depth

The Knicks filled one hole on their roster Monday, and have just one left.

Without a clear backup point guard, they remedied the issue by landing free agent Cameron Payne on a one-year, $3.1 million deal, a source confirmed to The Post’s Stefan Bondy.

The soon-to-be 30-year-old Payne comes to the Knicks after splitting last season with the rival 76ers and Bucks.

With Philadelphia, he averaged 9.3 points, 3.1 assists and shot 38.2 percent from 3-point range in 19.4 minutes across 31 games and eight starts.

The 6-foot-3 southpaw didn’t perform as well with Milwaukee in 47 games, his numbers all down across the board by comparison.

Payne has averaged 7.9 points, 3.3 assists and 2.1 rebounds in 405 career games and is a lifetime 36.9 percent shooter from distance.

The Knicks remain in need of a center to complete their title-contending roster after losing Isaiah Hartenstein to the Thunder.

There has been talk of a potential trade with the Jazz for intriguing center Walker Kessler, although league sources are skeptical the Knicks could put together a package enticing enough for Utah, The Post recently reported.

There remains the possibility of a reunion with Precious Achiuwa, a free agent who joined the Knicks in the OG Anunoby trade at the turn of the new year.

Payne is familiar with new Knicks forward Mikal Bridges, the two playing together earlier in their careers with the Suns.

The former Murray State star has bounced around the league, playing for six different teams and has plenty of playoff experience.

Bridges seemed happy with the move, posting a video on X of the two in their days with the Suns shortly after the news broke.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the Knicks will now look to trade Miles McBride.

While he technically served as the team’s backup point guard to Jalen Brunson last year, he is better suited to play off the ball after improving his long-range shooting.

This move will also enable second round pick Tyler Kolek to be eased in and not be asked to be an immediate contributor.

The Knicks’ offense was a mess without Brunson, and they needed someone capable of running the show.

Payne has the ability to be that player.

In the five games Brunson missed last year, the Knicks had an offensive rating of 109.4.

With him, it was 119.7.

It has been a busy offseason for the Knicks, who re-signed Anunoby and traded for Bridges.

There is still one move left, however: to find a center to pair with injury-prone big man Mitchell Robinson.

Payne recently got into trouble with the law, arrested on June 14 in Scottsdale, Ariz., on suspicion of giving a false police report.

The Arizona Republic reported that police were called to address a disturbance, and Payne refused to give his real name and gave a false report.

He was booked and later released.

Payne was charged with one count of refusing to provide a truthful name and one count of making a false report to law enforcement.
