Changes Coming to NIH Applications and Peer Review in 2025 https://grants.nih.gov/policy/changes-coming-jan-2025

This NIH Office of Extramural Research page serves as a central location where you can learn more about multiple changes coming in 2025 that will affect the submission and review of NIH grant applications. These changes include updates to the peer review and submission of most research project grants, fellowships, and training grants; Common Forms for NIH biographical sketch and Current and Pending (Other) Support; updated instructions for reference letters; and the transition to FORMS-I application instructions. Although each of these initiatives has specific goals, they are all meant to simplify, clarify, and/or promote greater fairness towards a level playing field for applicants throughout the application and review processes.

Early Stage Investigators

An ESI is a Program Director/Principal Investigator who has completed their terminal research degree or end of post-graduate clinical training, whichever is later, within the past 10 years and who has not previously competed successfully as a PD/PI for a substantial NIH independent research award. Early Stage Investigator (ESI) policies and related information (see https://grants.nih.gov/policy/early-stage/index.htm) are posted at the NIH Office of Extramural Research website. At this page, learn about NIH policies and how NIH support for ESIs helps promote the growth, stability, and diversity of the future biomedical research workforce:
