About Chris Cornell
Chris Cornell had it all: a voice capable of skyscraping highs and rumbling lows, lyrics that pierce the soul and a penchant for making other artists’ tunes all his own. Born in Seattle in 1964, the singer achieved stardom when Soundgarden’s punk-fuelled hard rock helped launch grunge in the early ’90s. Stints with the supergroups Temple of the Dog and Audioslave cemented his reputation as an unrivalled howler. But when Cornell stepped away from crushing loudness—at first with the ballad “Seasons” on 1992’s Singles soundtrack and then with his 1999 solo debut, Euphoria Mourning—darkly hued melodies took over. He consistently searched for novel ways to channel his restlessness, whether it meant working with pop producer Timbaland (Scream) or exploring folk-rock (Higher Truth). Arriving three years after Cornell’s 2017 death, No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. 1 features wrenching interpretations of classics like “Nothing Compares 2 U” that have become some of his most beloved recordings.
