Every Cloud - Silver Linings

Every Cloud - Silver Linings

“There’s a real power in music to change someone’s mood and improve how they feel that day,” Norfolk producer Bruce Fielder—aka Sigala—tells Apple Music. “I didn’t quite realise that power until I started putting music out and people would get in touch to say how the music had got them through a tough time or really uplifted them.” It’s not hard to see how Sigala’s music can have a positive impact on your mood. His second studio album Every Cloud is a joyous sugar rush of a record, eliciting the kind of endorphin surge usually reserved for after a sizeableworkout or an invigorating dip in an icy lake. “My last album was called Brighter Days, and the theme was overcoming problems and looking at things from a glass-half-full perspective,” he tells Apple Music. “I wanted to continue that approach here.” Featuring the inescapable huge singles “All By Myself”, “Melody” and “Lasting Lover” and including collaborations with a roll call of powerhouse vocalists including Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding and Becky Hill, Every Cloud sees Sigala at the peak of his powers and gently pushing at the edges of his sound. Here he talks through his album track by track. “Feels This Good” (with Mae Muller and Caity Baser) “So I originally made this song with Becky Hill and Ella Eyre a while back. I had the chorus then they came to my studio to work on it and it turned into something really special. But, because they were both focusing on their own projects, releasing that version just didn’t work out. What made the track great was that they’re really great friends so I knew we needed to replace them with singers who had a great relationship together. The song’s about friendship so we got Mae and Caity involved, who are also great friends. That chemistry really comes across in the finished version.” “Stay the Night” (with Talia Mar) “I’m really into gaming so I knew Talia from her Twitch channel. I knew she could sing so I approached her to come into the studio. She’s got an incredible voice, and it’s been amazing to be a part of her rise. This is one of my favourite tunes from the last few years and, again, is about friendship and bringing people together.” “Radio” (with MNEK) “I’ve wanted to work with MNEK for about a decade now! We met, made this tune, and I’ve been so excited to get it out since. I’ve never made a track with an offbeat before but it’s inspired by a lot of the Eurodance that was around when I was a kid. There’s a nostalgic feel to it and the track was just loads of fun to make.” “Living Without You” (with David Guetta and Sam Ryder) “This was originally written by Tom Grennan and Jin Jin, a songwriter I work with a lot. We wrote ‘Lullaby’ for Paloma Faith together. Jin Jin got in touch and said she’d ended up working on it with David and asked if I wanted to get involved. I jumped at the chance and set myself the challenge of making something I thought he’d love. I hadn’t met him before and he called me up after hearing my first version and said, ‘Oh my god, that vocal chop is insane!’ Tom couldn’t do the song in the end as he was working on his own album, so we got Sam in to do the vocals. I’m a huge Queen fan, and I think his voice is up there with Freddie’s.” “Melody” “I wrote this track with a few other producers and songwriters who I kind of grew up in the music industry with. We’ve all gone off and done our own thing but it was great to come back and write this song with friends. It’s a song I think works incredibly well in the club but has done really well on radio too.” “Wish You Well” (with Becky Hill) “Production-wise, there’s a bit of a throwback to trance and stuff I grew up with on this track. It gets an incredible reaction when I play it live, with everyone singing back the chorus. I love Becky and don’t think she always gets credit for what she’s achieved. This was so much fun, and the album wouldn’t be the same without it.” “Lasting Lover” (with James Arthur) “This is actually a tune Lewis Capaldi wrote originally and ended up in my inbox. It’s the first time I’ve managed to turn a ballad into a dance track, and I love the incredible emotion the track has. Lewis didn’t want to feature on it as he’d written it years ago, and James is one of the only singers who can match Lewis’ incredible voice. Then I added this motif we borrowed from MGMT’s ‘Time to Pretend’. We got in touch with them and they were really supportive and happy for us to use it, which was great. It’s a huge tune from the era I grew up in.” “All By Myself” (with Alok and Ellie Goulding) “I loved working with Alok as we’ve got quite different audiences, and it’s great to be able to blend our two genres and audiences. And I’ve wanted to work with Ellie for years. She was the genius behind suggesting we use the Depeche Mode sample in it. I work on my songs for ages and usually get to the point where I can’t tell if it’s good or not anymore. So it’s always amazing when you do finally release something and see it get the kind of reaction this track has had.” “You for Me” (with Rita Ora) “Charli XCX wrote this, and we’d been working on it together but she was in her own album cycle so couldn’t feature on it. It’s something that happens a lot, where artists write so many songs they end up with more than they can release! Charli and Rita are good friends so Charli actually reached out to Rita and asked her to sing on it. Rita really cares about the craft of her music and is an amazing singer so she was perfect to fill Charli’s shoes.” “Rely On Me” (with Gabry Ponte and Alex Gaudino) “Gabry was in Eiffel 65! And obviously Alex has done some amazing stuff in dance music too. It was incredible to work with people whose music I grew up with on this track. I love how it turned out. It’s got the sample from ‘2 Times’ by Ann Lee in it too, which was obviously a huge track when I was a kid too.” "Heaven on My Mind” (with Becky Hill) “I always play this in my sets. It’s towards the end of the album as it’s one of the clubbier tracks, and I wanted the record to flow nicely and get more club-focused towards the end. I wrote it in an amazing studio in South Thailand. Again, it’s great to get Becky on another track.”
