Just months after the dance-rock of 2021’s Medicine at Midnight (and the release of the acclaimed Bee Gees documentary How Can You Mend a Broken Heart), Foo Fighters assume new disco alter-egos here for a live in-studio performance of songs from the iconic pop outfit’s mid- to late-’70s, Miami-era peak. From “Night Fever” (partial namesake for 1977’s Saturday Night Fever) to “More Than a Woman” to Andy Gibb’s 1978 hit “Shadow Dancing” (featuring lead vocals from drummer Taylor Hawkins) to “Tragedy”, these are faithful renditions lovingly sung, frontman Dave Grohl clearly relishing the opportunity to mirror Barry Gibb’s storied falsetto in particular. Also included, on Side B, is a tight five-song set of Medicine at Midnight highlights: Taken together, it’s both a welcome addition to pop culture’s recent reappraisal of the Bee Gees’ work, as well as another look at the influence disco had on (some of) the Foos’ latest outing.
