On her sophomore EP, Nigerian singer-songwriter Kold AF makes a contemporary play at the dancehall-fusion efforts that lined Nigerian music for most of the 2000s—and her tone is as firm and daring as her writing. Her delivery comfortably sits in the sweet spot between soft and spiky, and she presents a darker, yet somewhat uplifting contrast to past releases like 2023’s KOLLIDE and 2022’s “Kold Szn”. Right off the bat, Kold AF (born Aninooritsewarami Alero Oritsesan) commands a fiery and fierce persona on opener “365”, where she declares, “Some people think I’m cocky and proud/But I’m just confident in who I am/And where I’m going.” All other tracks on the project attest to this as she continuously lays bare her desires. On “9 LIVES”, alongside Bkay EastGaad, she accounts for the tenacious spirit that allowed her transition from doe-eyed law student to an eccentric fusion artist. “MY WAY” sees her directly cautioning those who act as opps. With an assist from Uncommon Prophets, “CYCLE MUST BREAK” scrutinises the powers that seek to uphold the status quo.
