Superbloom is Apple Music’s home for young, risk-taking visionaries who think about music—and, increasingly, identity—differently. Few do either of those things as ingeniously as Steve Lacy. After rising to fame with Odd Future spinoff The Internet, the Compton native—then still a teenager—began producing for some of music’s A-listers (Kendrick Lamar, Vampire Weekend, Mac Miller, you name it) while cementing his reputation as an talented guitarist and songwriter. This year, the 24-year-old released his second solo album, the languid and kaleidoscopic Gemini Rights, which is an avant-garde variation on a classic theme: breaking up. The album runs the emotional spectrum (“anger, sadness, longing, confusion, happiness, horniness, confusion and fear,” he tells Apple Music) but makes a point not to land anywhere definitive. Ultimately, Lacy’s refusal to be boxed in—or to box himself in—is what makes him so relevant, so honest, and so perfect for Superbloom. “I’m still discovering myself,” he says about continuing to question his sexuality. “But the more I grow, the more I realise I can just be me. When I was a kid, I thought I had to be [a certain way]. But now I’m like, ‘Oh, I can kiss a boy or I can kiss a girl and nothing changes.
