This Texas trio (pronounced “kroong-bin”) whips up its smooth instrumentals from a mercurial combination of influences: Thai funk, Iranian pop, Jamaican dub, surf rock, old-school soul, ’60s psych, and the ineffable cool of Tarantino soundtracks. They build a globe-spanning sound using relatively little—Mark Speer’s expressive guitar, Laura Lee’s warm bass, and Donald Johnson’s breakbeat-inspired drums—but even more impressive is their accessibility. Whether experimenting with Krautrock on 2018’s Con Todo El Mundo or African highlife for their Texas Sun EP with Leon Bridges, Khruangbin beam out mellow grooves you can imagine the entire universe swaying to.
