Harper’s Bazaar: The Playlist by Bishop Briggs

Harper’s Bazaar: The Playlist by Bishop Briggs

If fashion and music go hand in hand—and of course they do—then think of playlists like a wardrobe, personally curated and deeply reflective of the wearer’s lifestyle, outlook and more. This particular one shows the diverse stylings and inspirations of indie-pop singer-songwriter Bishop Briggs, the musical director of the July issue of fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, which is producing a series of playlists with different musicians, available only on Apple Music. The theme of Briggs’ playlist is performance—a key part of her work that’s been on pause since late 2019 with the pandemic. “I’ve missed performing so much,” she says. “There is something that lights up in my spirit and soul when I get to be on stage. There were a few things that came to mind when diving into the concept [of the playlist]—the visual aspect, how it makes you feel, vocal performance and escapism.” All of these things are arguably core parts of “I Will Always Love You”, by Dolly Parton, one of her “number-one songwriting inspirations”, Briggs says. She also included “Lost”, by Frank Ocean, whose music makes Briggs “think deeper and feel deeper”, and “Good News”, by Mac Miller. “He brings an energy you can’t deny to his songs,” she says of the late rapper/producer. “He’s a very special artist I wish I could’ve collaborated with.” With each issue of Harper’s Bazaar, we’ll launch a new playlist with picks by their latest musical director, so stay tuned.
