Essential Albums
- Hit-loaded albums like this one launched Naomi and Wynonna Judd to the top of the charts in the ’80s. In line with their image as a mother and daughter who seem more like sisters, they come off like a distaff answer to The Everly Brothers: Their closer-than-close harmonies light up everything from country rockers like “Have Mercy” and “Rockin’ with the Rhythm of the Rain” to a twangy take on Lee Dorsey’s New Orleans R&B classic “Working in the Coal Mine”.
- Naomi and Wynonna Judd’s blockbuster debut album overflowed with No. 1 hits and made the mother-daughter duo country queens. But for all the sharp songcraft and pop-wise production, it was their goose-bumps-inducing pairing of pipes that put the twosome over the top. Whether bearing down on the bluesy bends of “My Baby’s Gone” or daring you to keep your eyes dry on tear-jerking ballads (“Mr. Pain”), The Judds knew how to work their one-of-a-kind vocal blend for all it was worth.

About The Judds
The Judds, the mother-daughter act of Naomi and Wynonna, were one of country music’s most successful duos of all time, releasing 14 No. 1 singles and 6 Platinum albums. ∙ Naomi spent years self-promoting The Judds while working as a nurse and single mom, before landing a record deal with RCA Nashville in 1983. ∙ When The Judds earned their first No. 1 hit with the 1984’s “Mama He’s Crazy,” they were only the second female duo to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. ∙ Their double-Platinum debut album, 1984’s Why Not Me, produced such hit singles as “Girls Night Out,” “Love Is Alive,” and the Grammy-winning title track. ∙ The title track from 1990’s Love Can Build a Bridge was covered by Cher, Chrissie Hynde, Neneh Cherry, and Eric Clapton, and it was the official Comic Relief charity single in 1995. ∙ In 1991, the Judds’ televised farewell concert drew six million viewers and was one of the most popular pay-per-view events in TV history. ∙ Over their career, they earned five Grammys and nine CMA Awards, and the Academy of Country Music named them Top Vocal Duo for seven years in a row.
