About J.PERIOD

A hip-hop traditionalist at heart, award-winning mixtape DJ J. Period has garnered praise from for his acclaimed Best Of mixtape series. Period first decided to do a Best Of mixtape while attending a listening party for Nas' 2002 album God's Son. He recorded some of Nas' words at the party and later mixed together his favorite Nas tracks and freestyles, gaining the approval of the rap star himself, who hosted the mixtape. The Best of Nas helped earn him many accolades. He approached his following mixtapes with the same method, and thus, it was considered a monumental feat to involve Lauryn Hill for the double-volume disc The Best of Lauryn Hill. Capping off the year 2006 with mixes for the Roots and C.L. Smooth, he won the prestigious Mixtape DJ of the Year award at the Power Summit held in the Dominican Republic. Outside of the mixtape game, his original productions have been featured in films such as 2007's American Gangster, 2008's Street Kings, and 2015's Terminator Genisys. He was hired by Activision in 2008 to soundtrack the video game Tony Hawk's Motion and was eventually hired as Music Supervisor for the Brooklyn Nets. He put everything he learned into practice for his debut album, 2021's Story to Tell (Chapter One), using the format to further his storytelling approach, including narration by Dave Chappelle. He followed his debut with Story to Tell (Chapter Two) in 2024.
