New Late Night Tales compilations don’t come around that often. And it’s always reason to celebrate when they do. The revered series has been running since 2001, with dozens of compilations curated by artists from their personal collections, specifically tailored to soundtrack the wee hours. They’ve been helmed by Nils Frahm, Floating Points and Four Tet among others, and, now, singer/songwriter/producer Jordan Rakei. The UK-based, Australia-via-New Zealand artist, whose entry marks the series’ 20th year, has mapped out a tender compilation comprising exactly the right vibes for late-night listening: emotive and engaging, yet gentle; sentimental and with stories to tell, but melodic and warm enough to ease the journey from dusk ’til dawn and beyond. Listen out for highlights which include a smattering of Rakei’s own tunes (and his gorgeous new cover of Jeff Buckley’s “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over”); Puma Blue’s sparse, vintage-sounding “Untitled 2”; Connan Mockasin’s sweet and haunting “Momo’s”; and Homay Schmitz’s airy, electronic “Speak Up”.
