“You can feel a lot of motion and energy,” Caroline Polachek tells Apple Music of Desire, I Want to Turn Into You, her second solo album. “And chaos. I definitely leaned into that chaos.” While those things are true, the record also plays with subdued textures and atmospheres in a way that most pop albums typically avoid. Some of those influences are laid bare in her Early Hours DJ mix—a soundtrack for winding down after being up all night, or for rising to meet the sun. In this instalment, Polachek explores a host of mood-driven sounds: trip-hop from Tricky, discordant ambient from Debit, ethereal vocal vibes from Popol Vuh, Scottish bagpipe music from Brighde Chaimbeul, IDM from Torus and much more.
